GearWrench introduced the original patented 5° ratcheting wrench in 1996 and quickly became a go-to brand for professional automotive technicians. The innovation didn’t stop there. Year after year, the GearWrench brand continues to expand its line-in ratcheting tools and beyond-to help automotive and industrial technicians get their jobs done faster and easier. Having the right tool for the job is critical and technicians working in cramped spaces understand better than anyone the power of this simple statement. I use these tapered punches in a variety of applications. I’ve found the smallest punch to be useful for removing hinge pins and marking the center locations for holes to be drilled in wood and soft metals. I’ve used the larger punches for knock-outs in switch boxes and NEMA enclosures. The steel alloy punches have a phosphate coating that adds some corrosion resistance provided oil or another sealer is applied and maintained on the surface. Made in China.

SUMMARY: A NICE SET OF PUNCHES FOR THE PRICE.BACKGROUND: Some of my punches are retired screw drivers. They work ok, but not great. And none of them are tapered. The chance to evaluate the new GearWrench set was too good to pass up.CAVEAT: This is my first set of tapered punches. I’ve been using old screwdrivers, nails, bolts, and other types of punches. So the review is based on these punches as they are, not head-to-head with any other brand. FIT AND FINISH: The punches have the same high quality feel as my other GearWrench tools. One difference is the ground finish which is a nice break from the polished finish on their wrenches.FEATURES: From the Home Depot page, with my comments as appropriate. • Softened and tapered striking end reduces potential to chip ◦ Nothing new…same as most other punches. • Ground surface for ease of identification ◦ The markings are easy to read if you need to. • Precision hardened working ends ◦ Not sure what precision hardened means, but they are hard. • Used to install and remove pins and shafts and to align holes ◦ The taper is handy for aligning those “just off” assemblies; much better than an old Phillips head screwdriver. • Contains 1/8 in. x 8 in., 5/32 in. x 8 1/2 in., 3/16 in. x 9 in., 1/4 in. x 11 in. ◦ A good spread of sizes for most of my DIY homeowner projects. And the long length is especially handy if you’ve ever tried working in close quarters with a short punch • Made from alloy steel ◦ This is a bit of fluff as I’d be surprised and disappointed if they were straight steel. • 4 total piecesOPERATION: I found the longer length than my other “punches” very handy. There was enough grip length I wasn’t worried about a missed blow smashing my hand or fingers. The striking face deformed a little under the small sledge/ball peen, but that is expected. The driving tip held up fine against a few stuck clevis pins. SUMMARY: A really nice set of punches that round out my punch and chisel collection. Worth the modest price.

This 4-piece long-tapered punch set is about as heavy duty as you’d be able to find.I’ve used this set to align some pieces I was assembling. These punches, being tapered, made the alignment a breeze. The construction is heavy duty. The pictures do not do these punches justice…They are heavy in weight, with good, thick, broad striking ends. These punches are exactly what’s needed for any come-along jobs you have.Highly Recommended.

I really love this GEARWRENCH LONG TAPER PUNCH SET (4-PIECE)! These center punches are super long, enabling you to get to those hard to reach places when you need them the most! They have a good hand feel, which keeps them from sliding around in your hand! Gearwrench made this set like all of their other tools, which are high quality and low price! I highly recommend this great set of punches!

This tough, high quality tool set works well for many tasks beyond installing or removing stubborn pins, rusty bolts and shafts or to align drilled holes. Each tapered punch is specifically designed to take a heavy pounding and is deferentially tempered. That means the tapered striking end is softer than the working end to reduce the potential to chip. Another plus is their long length; this makes it possible to hold them in position with your entire hand, yet each one is slim enough to slip into tight spots. I last used these tapered punches to help remove the races on a failed spindle bearing, then later to help align several bolt holes on sheet metal machine covers.

Occasionally you need something a little longer and stronger than the standard punch. This set gives you that. Each punch is very clearly marked for tip size ranging from 1/8 to 1/4 inch. These punches are hardened steel alloy with a black oxide protective coating. The striking surface is more malleable to prevent chipping. I have used these for knocking loose rusted cotter pins on old tractor plows, punching out worn lawn mower wheel bearings, and even sinking a large finishing nail if needed. This set is a good value considering that many long punches run from 7 to 10 dollars each.

Gear Wrench makes very solid, heavy duty tools and this punch set is no exception. As you can see from my picture they are large (11″ longest, 8″ shortest) and the tips range in size from 1/4″ to 1/8″. They are made to insert and remove pins, but I find a lot of unofficial uses also, like setting nails, enlarging a hole or just making something stubborn move. Most people won’t use these a lot, but you’ll be glad you have them when you need one.

This is a really nice punch set. They appear to be well made of high quality material. There are 4 punches inside a nice plastic storage case with a top that seals to keep out dirt and debris. There are 4 sizes. 1/4″, 3/16″, 5/32″, 1/8″. All are properly tapered and have a nice finish. The storage container has a reinforced eyelet for storage on a hook nail on the wall. If you need a punch set, this one will fit the bill.

This is a review of the GearWrench Long Taper Punch Set (4-Piece). wow, the picture in the description above does not do this set justice. The first thing you will notice is how heavy and sturdy feeling these are. I have a set of HF specials, and this set just blows those away. The sizes are really easy to read on the side of the punch. Really, there isn’t anything not to love about these.

This latch gets a lot of use. On top of that it gets wiggled and jiggled when my birds decide to hop up on the gate. The nails that hold it get loose and put the latch in a position so that it will not allow the gate to open. What is needed to put the nails that hold it back into position so that it works again is something long, so you don’t bust your knuckles on the latch, and thin, so that it fits on the nails. The largest of the set is just perfect for the job. No more busted knuckles.
