This is by far the most awesome tap and die set I’ve ever owned. It covers all sizes I will ever use and it is very high quality as you would expect for $200

I have used this tap and die set for a little over a month now and it seems to be a good quality tool set. I use them on and off in my work and in some hobby stuff I do. Starting with the case-everything fits nicely in the formed hard plastic case, pieces don’t shift around or come loose and are easy to identify in their spaces. The taps and dies are sharp and the sizes I have used repeatedly have stayed sharp and continue to cut cleanly. It’s also nice to have one set that has both SAE and Metric sizes in the most commonly used sizes. When cutting, remember to go forward a little and then back off, then go forward a little again and then back off and so on for the cleanest cut threads. I hope you find this helpful.

As of today, 16Jan 2013, the set pictured is a 40 piece set. The 75 piece set comes with much more. I bought my set over a year ago but just recently used it for the first time. I was extremely impressed. I used it to chase the threads in multiple engine components as I pulled the engine in my 1967 Dodge apart. I also used it to remove two broken exhaust manifold studs by carefully drilling out as much of the stud as I could without damaging the thread in the heads and used the tap to cut out the remaining threads of the stud. Took some time, but worked flawlessly. The ratcheting adapter is awesome. A buddy of mine helping with the stud removal commented several times how much he wished he had one.The only reason I didn’t rate it a higher value is the price has gone up 50% since I bought mine. I paid just under $100 a little over a year ago. Still, it’s a good value. Not sure why the price had to go up…maybe because they knew they had a good product.

I have been putting off getting a tap and die set for years. I’m a DIYer and when an issue comes up where I need a tap and die set I would have to call in help instead of being able to complete myself. I have looked at the much cheaper chain store bands but when you are doing something like removing a broken bolt in an engine block the last thing you want is to have the tap and die set fail as well. The Gearwrench kit is high quality and is made by Apex which makes the Craftsman brand. They should last my lifetime and one day become part of my sons’ or grandchildren’s tool set.

I love this set I have had it forever. It has never let me down and has saved me alot of money because I can do it myself .

Even better than expected. This is a quality set, and my favorite part has to be the ratcheting handle that is reversible.

this has to be one of the most complete tap and die sets I have ever seen. I am a diesel mechanic by trade and was looking for another tap and die set for the home. I ordered this set and let’s just say it’s nice . I may bring this set to work and bring my old set home. This set is complete.

This GearWrench Tap & Die set is as versatile as it is fabulous. The ratchet is reversible and is super comfortable in the hand. They call it a “T” wrench and it works for both taps and dies using their Vortex design. Whodathunk??? The dies very neatly fit a holder that extends below the handle so you save your knuckles from being scraped. A die adapter is included so you can use dies made to other international standards. The material for the taps and dies is a “high quality carbon tool steel”, apparently not HSS (high speed steel) or they would have specified. The taps are mounted in pull up and pull out holders for fantastic protection. If you are tapping a new thread and need to “break the chip” as you go there is a straight round handle to fit the tap holders so you don’t have to deal with the ratchet. Oh yeah, they even include a tap drill chart for everything in the set. All the drive tooling is under GearWrenches LIFETIME WARRANTY but the taps and dies are NOT. All the taps and dies are clearly marked for size and their respective place in the case is also marked. HINT: Use your wife’s fingernail polish in whatever 2 colors you can obtain and color code the SAE tools from the metric and their respective places in the case just to make things easier.

Had a problem with my Toyota Highlander the dealership said would cost $1600 to fix. The particular job required a tap and die set and a little patience to correct. The Gearwrench set worked perfectly and the problem was solved. Total cost about $160. And I have a great tap and die set to boot. What’s not to like. Thanks Gearwrench.

Exactly what I needed. Ratchet style driver made it easy to easily start the tap without getting it cocked or off of 90.

Just what I needed! I loved the ratcheting driver as it helped me tap some holes in a tight location.

I don’t have any experience with this brand, so I can’t speak to how well this — or any of their other products — will hold up, but I haven’t had any problems so far; everything has cut threads as I expect it to. The ratcheting handle is a pretty great idea and has proven very convenient. Everything fits well in the included carrying case. My only complaint is that I do with it came with a few larger sizes.

I put this set through somewhat challenging use finding that the taps dull with too rapidly when tapping in steel, even when using cutting oil specifically formulated for that purpose. I plan to address that by replacing the taps with ones of higher quality as they wear out. I had no such issue with the dies. The selection of taps and dies sizes is pretty good. I like the case provided with this set as it makes for good organization of both the taps and dies, holding them in place. Clear marking is molded into the case for sizes. The ratcheting drive is handy because it comes with adaptation features that permit use of extensions and GearWrench ratchet handles, increasing its versatility. I have down-rated this product solely because of my experience with tap durability for the sizes I used. Otherwise it is a good product overall.
