GearWrench 1/2 in. DRIVE MICROMETER TORQUE WRENCH 30-250 FT-LBS – a Home Depot Seeds Program ReviewI don’t often have a need for a torque wrench but when it happens I want something decent. This GearWrench 1/2 inch Micrometer Torque Wrench seems to fit the bill for my heavier duty work. I have a 3/8 inch drive micrometer torque wrench for lighter work but it’s only good for torques in the 50-250 INCH-Pounds while this GearWrench is good for 30-250 FOOT-Pounds (54.2-352.6 Newton-Meters) I had used a borrowed beam style wrench before but I decided to get my own micrometer style wrench. I thought the one I got with a 3/8” drive would suffice but I couldn’t even use it to put the lugs on my car. I decided to get this heavier duty wrench to fill out my torque wrench uses – however infrequent they are.The GearWrench Micrometer Torque Wrench feels good. It’s solidly made band everything is polished chrome or anondized – right down to the forward/reverse switch. The entire handle is knurled anodized aluminum with the mid-point clearly identified. The numbers on the adjustment sleeve and the scales – foot-pounds and Newton-meters – on the shaft are large and heavily etched into the steel and are very easy to read. I rarely need or use a torque wrench and a tool this heavy duty may be overkill for me but given that the GearWrench Micrometer Torque Wrench is all metal I wouldn’t hesitate recommending this for daily, professional work. The operation of the GearWrench Torque Wrench could not be easier. You pull back on the adjustment sleeve and turn the handle until the desired torque is reached. Release the sleeve and the handle locks into place. In use, once the desired torque is reached, there’s a lightly audible sound to let you know it’s done and the wrench “breaks” to provide a tactile feel. I have no way to test the accuracy but the wrench does come with a NIST Certificate of Calibration with a tester’s name and the date of the calibration and identification of the wrench and it shows the accuracy of my wrench being well within the +/- 3% listed in the specs. This is well within my required accuracy. Like other GearWrench ratchets I have there’s no quick release for the sockets and I really would have liked that.Bottom line? The GearWrench Micrometer Torque Wrench feels well-made band all parts of it are metal. I have no question of its durability. The setting markings are easily read and setting the desired torque is a breeze. The certification of calibration is a very nice touch. The “audible sound” is a little weak but the head “break” or tactile head deflection lets you know when the desired torque has been reached. There is no quick release for the sockets. I’m not a professional whose livelihood depends on this tool but I certainly think it feels heavy duty enough to do so. I doubt I’ll ever use this GearWrench Micrometer Torque Wrench a huge amount but I think it’s a very good choice for my heavier duty work. Here’s the manufacturer’s website for additional product information:http://www.gearwrench.com/catalog/product/view/id/17097/

I’m very satisfied with this torque wrench. The superior quality is clear. Calibration and accuracy +/- 3% between 20% and 100% of wrench capability is far better than less expensive wrenches. Highly recommended.

This model 85066 GearWrench torque wrench is a fabulous tool. This is a hefty tool, weighing in at about 3.7 lbs with out a socket, and it feels good in use. The build quality is obvious, from the operation of the mechanisms to the finish of the material in the storage case. The detente ball in the 1/2” square shaft holds the sockets firmly, but not so firmly that it’s difficult to remove the socket. Operation is the same as other micrometer-type wrenches: pull the locking ring, rotate the handle to the desired setting, release the ring, and apply pressure on the handle until you feel the single click. The torque scale is marked in both SAE (ft-lbs) and Metric (Newton-meters). The only (minor) issue I found is that the finish is so smooth and shiny it can be difficult to read the torque settings. I’d prefer a brushed finish on the scale, as I have seen on other wrenches, and it may be that a bit of dirt and grime in the etched markings will make them easier to read. This is an expensive tool, so I don’t recommend it for the casual user, but anyone needing a reliable, high precision, wide range (30-250 ft-lb) torque wrench will certainly appreciate this tool.

I have been a builder remodeler for 49 years, and while I don’t always do mechanic work, when I do, and need specific torque, this GEARWRENCH 1/2 IN. DRIVE MICROMETER TORQUE WRENCH 30-250 FT/LBS is perfect. I have used a manual version before, but this is far more accurate. It is of high quality, and works very well for work requiring wrenches like these. I like that it Is polished chrome, as that makes it easy to clean when you’re done. This tool is of very high quality as well, and is a very good example of quality tools. The included case is also a very nice touch to keep it protected when not in use.

this is likely the best manual torque wrench i have ever used i have a few manual torque wrenches in the past but not nearly as precise as this one while working on a 1994 International box truck air compressor that slid on its mount causing the belt to loosen this torque wrench put to the test insuring the right amount of foot LBS to make sure it would not slide off again. the design of the tool is heavy and well made and this was my fist project with it and it proved its self as quality tool the twist and set is a nice feature and by its click noise instead of a gauge made it clear when the right torque is reached a really Great tool update to my tool box

Well built and has some weight to it, scale markings are highly visible and easy to read.Knurled anodized aluminum handle lets you grip the wrench comfortably, helping to reduce hand fatigue.Midpoint on handle clearly marked for accuracy. Overall length of this wrench is 24 1/4″ long. Has measurements in Foot Pounds, Metric and Newtons. Range is 30 – 230 foot pounds. Takes 1/2″ drive sockets.Comes with instructions and a heavy duty plastic case. Gear Wrench makes great hand tools which I compare to Craftsman hand tools. I highly recommend this wrench.
