Pretty much ready to go out of the box. Works quite well with a little practice. Pay attention to the blade tension adjustment. As I got into wood that was about 1 inch thick it was easy to break blades. (not especially hard wood, just mahogany). So I suggest getting a pack of blades when you get the saw and see what works best for you. I used the heavier/wider blades and could still make tight turns.

The light and air hose need to be longer

This is exactly what I was looking for! The machine itself is quiet (obviously until you start actually cutting wood then it’s Hella loud) and it’s lightweight so I can move it in ND out of my house no problem!I do wish the blade was a little easier to remove and replace but it is what it is, still a pale of changing the blade though 🙂

The General International model # BT8007 is, I think, an entry-level machine. I’m a homeowner/DIY’er and for the few times a year I need a scroll saw I don’t need an expensive pro level saw.Setup, from unboxing to plugged in and working, took about 20 minutes. The instructions in the included manual are quite clear. The table on my saw was about 3 degrees out of plumb and the foot needed adjustment (see photos).Temporarily I’m running the saw on a ‘Workmate’ workbench. This is not optimal – you’ll really want to consider bolting the saw down to a solid platform. There’s some vibration when the saw is powered up, although it hasn’t tried to vibrate off of the workbench.A 14mm wrench (not included in the box) is handy for installing the air tube; it can be done with pliers but using an open-ended wrench is easier. Once installed the puffs of air do keep the work area clear of sawdust. The tube doesn’t put out a high volume of air, but gets the job done. There’s also a hose port on the front of the saw for attaching a vacuum to remove the sawdust. The included factory installed LED lamp does a decent job of lighting the cutting area. There’s some vibration in the lamp, but it doesn’t cause ‘flicker’ when working (YMMV). Bolting the saw down to a workbench might reduce vibrations in the lamp more. The speed control dial and the on/off switch are on the right front of the saw. The on/off switch offers a safety key that can be removed to make the saw unusable. A nice feature if you have kids. The table tilt thumbscrew is on the left front of the saw. There’s no SPM (strokes per minute) gauge on the saw, you just dial in the speed that works best on the piece you’re cutting. It works but takes some trial and error to get the speed where you want it. The manufacturer claims it’s a “precision” dial, but I’ve not found it all that precise – with no true speeds marked on the dial it’s (to me, YMMV) trial and error. The speed control dial is one of my issues with the machine – the other being blade replacement. There’s a storage box on the left side of the saw that can hold blades and/or the hex wrench, a place in the machine housing to store the t-handle wrench, and a trough molded into the body to hold blades. The storage box is difficult to open, too much pressure is required on the latch release. Since my saw will (eventually) be bolted down in a permanent location my plan is ignore the little storage box.Adjusting the blade tension is critical – too loose and the blade vibrates and doesn’t cut properly, too tight and the blade breaks. Trust me on this – tighten it down a bit too much and the blade will snap. On the bright side, scroll saw blades are inexpensive. Two come with the machine (which is good, it took me about 10 minutes to break one). Not being familiar with scroll saws and having read other reviews noting that blade changes are difficult on this saw, I expected major trouble when replacing the broken blade. The instruction manual isn’t bad, but if you’re new to the workings of a scroll saw then there are some helpful videos on the Internet. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to replace the broken “pinned” blade with a new “pinless” blade. I did cheat a bit before making the attempt; being totally unfamiliar with scroll saws I watched a couple of “how to” videos.Overall, the saw will meet my (beginner’s) needs and I’m happy with it’s performance so far. The speed control and blade changing procedure are not great, and those features prevent me from giving a five star review. General International offers a 2-year warranty on the machine.HTHRegards,Jim

First time using a scroll saw, The variable speed saw took a little time to set-up. I added some insulation for vibration other than that the saw came complete with all the necessary tools for adjusting the blade etc. The instructions were easy to follow and I was scrolling within an hour. I really like the variable speed for different cutting needs. I had a pet project that came out really nice. This is a solid piece of equipment and should last me quite a few years.

Great price and features. I suggest you buy name brand blades as they break easy and name brand seem a little better.

This is the identical twin to the Wen scroll saw. It operates very smoothly once set up properly. Fit and finish was great and so far it is cutting beautifully. The light vibrates a bit at high speed but I built a simple stay that mounts to the blower tube bracket by phillips screw and it holds the light tightly. Dust blower is also not a high point but does pulse enough to keep the blade area clean.

I really like the saw, but the LED light does not work. Which is a disappointment.
