I like this 36 in. Lighted Mechanical Pick-Up Tool from General Tools. All too often a part gets dropped in a spot that’s virtually impossible to get to with the hands or a tool, and a pick-up tool is a necessity. I have several magnetic pick-up tools, one of which is lighted. However, they ONLY work with magnetic (ferrous) items, so if I need to retrieve a non-magnetic item those are not any help. Another issue with magnetic type tools is that they often stick to parts other than the one to be retrieved, making it difficult to reach the item. My last claw type pick-up tool broke at the plunger, so I’ve needed a new one. This one fits the bill very well. The plunger control handle is larger, solid, and much easier to use than any I’ve had before. The light switch is built into the plunger handle and works when the plunger is depressed. The claw appears to be quite strong, opens to 1 in., and the light is plenty bright, and right where needed. The 36 in. black coated cable is good for all-around use in the shop, and is flexible, yet stiff enough to guide easily. I may even want to get the 12 and/or 24 in. models.

This is such a universal tool. I got it for my husband, who works on electronic equipment. He is usually working in a tight compact space repairing and replacing small parts. He would often drop screws and other items behind machines or between them. This tool is amazing, he is able to retrieve almost all of those items now! I even bought a second one for myself to use around the house. The light on the end is super useful.

I own much larger pick up tools that I use pretty much daily. I also have a small telescoping magnetic tool. While I use these a lot, they are useless when it comes to picking up the Legos that my grandson and granddaughter drop around the house. I love this tool. It works extremely well under sofas, on busy carpet, wood floors, etc. to both find and then pick up those pesky little pieces of plastic that are waiting to cripple you when you step on them barefoot.I’m sure that I will find all sorts of uses for this tool (behind the washer and dryer, under the nightstand, you get the picture) but if it only picked up Legos, it would be well worth it.The tool is light-up and takes three LR41 batteries. The light is bright. We’ve used this multiple times and figure that it will become a staple tool that doesn’t go further than our indoor utility closet. I just wish I had had this when my own children were young.

I’ve had one of these style pick-up tools in my tool chest for many years. I’ve found it to come in handy on many occasions with dropped items like screws and nuts. This tool can retrieve items that fall down along the frame rail or somewhere that I can’t reach with my hand. This is an upgrade to the one I had because it has a light at the end of it to help you see what you’re trying to pick up. The little grabbers that protrude from the end of the tube are strong and this works really well.

This is one of those handy little tools that you never think about… UNTIL YOU NEED IT. When you need it you really need it. I can’t tell you how many swear words it’s saved me in the past few weeks collecting random nuts and bolts from the bowels of my engine bay. There was one bolt in particular that would have required removing the entire plastic tray (and 30 clips) to recover, if I didn’t have this tool on hand to fetch it. The claw opens wide enough to grab most bolt shafts and heads. It takes a little practice to get it right, but five minutes working with this top side can save a half hour under the car. The light is surprisingly effective too. Pick one up and store it somewhere for that one day when you REALLY need it.

36 Inch Mechanical Pick-Up Tool. Allows you to pick up dropped screws and other small items without bending over. I have a weakness in my legs and this tools makes it easy for me to retrieve those dropped items. Contains a LED light that comes on automatically when you extend the jaws. Batteries included and installed. 4 prong jaws that extend about 1 inch. The stem is thin and flexible to get into tight spaces. Easy to operate. Only thing missing may be a magnet to help pick up metal objects.

The long reach is nice but the flexible shaft is not as flexible as I had hoped. It is difficult to flex around 90 degree turns.

This pick-up tool with a light at the end will come in so handy. I am constantly dropping things in between the seats of my car and will finally be able to see them and reach them conveniently. I had a tool like this without the light at the end and used it so many times, until I lost it. You push the button on the handle which opens the claws and shines a light. Batteries are included and in the handle.

This is one handy little tool as well as being a back saver. I have a huge Organ Pipe cactus in my back yard that litters the ground with several hundred seed pods / flowers at certain times of the year. Since these can be painful if picked up by hand, I have always used a pair of pliers to pick them up, and all that bending over aggravates my bad back. With this 36″ long pick-up tool, I can easily get them with no bending, and if the pods have fallen deep under the cactus stems, I can reach them without ending up with spines in my arm. The added utility of having a light built in is so useful. Many times I have tried to fish things out from under a sofa or behind a cloths dryer holding a flash light in one hand and a wire hook in the other. Now I’ve got the LED light and the 4 pronged claw all in one tool.

I got this pickup expecting it to be a better quality than most. I had to work on it a bit to get the reacher/claws jaw to open correctly. After that adjustment, it seems to work fine. I do believe it is a good quality pickup tool, I especially like the grip and open/close mechanism. The lighted end is a nice when working in a dark place where you can’t always get a flashlight in. The 36 inch reach is very handy.

If you’re feeling your age in your back, as I am, you will like gadgets like these that keep you from having to crouch down and crawl around to retrieve dropped stuff. I had dropped a package of wire nuts in the garage, some of which scattered under the shelves. Since I had enough for my project, I decided they could live there until I needed them. Only then was I going to get down there and fish them out with a yardstick.I got this pickup tool because the grabber I have is too big and clumsy for some things. I have a magnetic telescoping reacher thingy, which is great for finding nails, bolts, staples, but not for non-metallic things. With this, and especially the light, I could easily retrieve the nuts with little effort. The only dings I would give it is that it’s very stiff and grabs tight. You can’t go after something delicate. Like, you can’t grab a bug with it. (Well, you *could* but having to clean it defeats the purpose.) And it being flexible to get into tight spaces is great, but it’s a tad floppy trying to go for something straight.Overall, not something I’ll use a lot, but something I’ll really like having when I need it.
