This is a good deal. You get a 1/2 inch dovetail bit with the jig. The downside is you’ve only got about 6 inches of dovetailing before you have to move the piece and reset. If you’re building smaller drawers that’s fine, if it’s a longer cut this will slow you down and increase your chances for errors. Quality is good. It’s a solid build and should get the job done for a long time.

After fighting a dovetail jig from another company, I had almost given up. With this one, I have already made half and full dovetails and even joined some boards together. Learning curve was small because of the well written documentation.

I think it is a good tool, but it is fashioned for blind dovetails and that’s not what I’m needing. I sent it back. Maybe I should have kept it.

I got this for a Amish Gentleman, to use because they don’t use electric tools, he liked the product but to secure the wood it had too much play

When wood is clamped into the jig, the jig deflects (twist) and creates an uneven surface under the router face. This can result in unequal depth of cuts.

This seems like a fine instrument. It took a couple of times practicing to orient the cuts correctly but once you get the hang of it it’s pretty easy. It does seem like the joints are a bit too tight because the partial dovetails on the ends of the material I was using tend to split the wood on the ends when I connect the pieces. I think I’ll sand the end tails just a bit to keep this from happening.I had a question about alternative dovetail router bits I could use and the General Tools tech support guy (Jack) got back to me very quickly with the answers.

It did the job once I practiced with spare wood cutting the dove tails. I was creating drawers and found that marking the boards pin in and tails out was helpful as well as numbering each pin and tail per each corner. Adjusting router depth was key to obtain a tight fit. Instructions were good and helpful.

I have both v1 and v2 of these jigs, as well as a larger, much more expensive dovetail jig.Bottom line: with practice, you can make very nice joints that work well enough that glue is optional.Limitations: This jig is a 2 pass unit (my $$$ jig is a 1 pass for 1/2 blind), and it can only due up to a 6″ board before you have to re-position the jig. The jig has a spacer/guide to move the jig for wider stock, so making joints on boards over 6″ works fine, you just have to move the jig. Hey, for less than $50, what do you expect? My 12″ jig cost 4x this one.Version 2 of this jig adds a bar in place of the 6 screws version 1 had to secure the stock, and a side knob I am not sure what it does, but it is added since V1.The drill bits are bearing types, so the bit does the guiding through the jig, not the router base. You can, however, use a 1/2″ guide with a router and a 1/2″ bit, so you are not limited to the bearing bits if you have a nice router.I like mine, I kept them even after getting a more expensive jig. The reason? These units make the pins the thickness of the board, all of it. So if you have a 3/4″ board, your pins are 3/4″ and your tails are 3/4″ deep. The more expensive jig only uses 1/2 the thickness for the pins, and the other 1/2 for the tails. So, in theory, this unit makes stronger joints. Who really stresses out their joints to the max on a regular basis? Not many, and not me, but if I ever need a stronger joint, or I want to make a full pin joint, I have the General jigs to do it.

I was in need of a dovetailer that was easy use with a router. I viewed several youtube videos and decided on this one. It was easy to follow the instructions and after a few trial cuts I obtained the setting I wanted with excellent results. The only complaint I have is that a square cut bit is not included with the bearing guide. I have found it difficult to find one of these with the bearing guide at the base of the bit rather than the top. Overall I am extremely satisfied with the purchase and the price can’t be beat!

Other than the bit missing from the tool, which the MFG replaced by sending me a new one, all was good with the unit.

I have never used a dovetail jig before and this particular one is great and simple to use. Price was right too. Too bad you have to order it online. Would have rather picked it up at my local Home Depot.
