I had thought a type C connection was important. WRONG. I could have purchased a smaller Western Digital and also thrown in an adapter from USB to type C for $35 less. If I had it to do over, Id own the smaller Western Digital. Also, the Glyph did not work when I attempted to backup my laptop. Technical support was very helpful and the solution was to use a different port on my laptop – even though the first port works fine for everything else. Thus Id avoid this unit.

I’ve used Glyph HD for the longest time. I love how they work and so far I have no complaints beside perhaps the different cables and different ports I find in every new version..

I need a portable drive for video editing om Mac laptop. I fill up one of these every year or two. They work perfectly. (I buy cheaper 8TB WD drives to back these up.)

As others have stated, this has been a total disappointment. It cannot be trusted to complete a task without disconnecting.

I’m using this on a mac for external storage, not time machine. I connected it and had no problems copying data onto it. I do not hear it at all and it is just warm to touch, not hot.

This item was purchased specifically for storing raw video files to be shot while traveling in different countries. It has vast storage space, which is good because I just got a GoPro Hero 5 and plan to shoot plenty of 4K footage. Its casing is made of thick rubber and feels very solid. I’ve used it a lot already (only bought it in September), and it seems very robust and reliable. That said, it weighs a ton. I have packed it in suitcases and always have to account for the extra kilograms when planning a flight, because baggage size and weight are so strictly monitored these days. As such, while it qualifies as ‘portable,’ it’s really a behemoth. Simply putting thick rubber on a device and calling it ‘portable’ is a bit of a stretch. I would never dream of dropping it, for one thing, and for another, it makes too much noise when it’s switched on to leave it on all night in your room, for example. You have to switch it off, which means ejecting, etc. For the most part, this drive is going to sit on my desk at home when I’m working with video. I have no serious complaints.

Need more storage and the old drives are just too small The Cupertino fruit vendor charges an arm and a leg for internal storage . The bigger the better on these Ill probably buy a back to back this up and store it at a relatives house just to safgaurd my work

when I updated to High Sierra time machine could no longer backup to my WD HDD, even after reformatting. Found similar issues on net. Glyph has been a joy to use; fast and I assume will last longer than my other brands that I replace after a year or two.

always worth buying the better drives. So far, so good!

High capacity external hard drive. Quick transfer of data + very quiet. Excellent rubber padding makes it a bit more bulky, but so much more secure, especially when traveling. Would certainly recommend to a friend.

I’m hardly an expert but this thing is fast, faster than any HD I’ve owned in the past. Simply plug it in and it does what it’s designed to do – back up my Mac and save my files. Too early to speak to long term reliability. So far, so good.

12 TB and 7200rpm makes this a great drive for video file storage and editing. It’s also quiet.

As some of the reviewers mention, the device does make some noise while working. This is subjective, but it is not too distracting. It is solid and heavy, which is an advantage to protect valuable work. It looks appealing with rubber encasing. However, the one important detail is the reformatting to Windows. While this is not too difficult, it is not as easy as people keep saying. There was no information on the company website on how this is done. The company does assist in doing the reformatting by phone if contacted by phone.

Good drive so far. Works like it’s supposed too with my Mac Pro. Loved that it was formatted for Mac. Worked quick, right out of the box.

This is my 4th drive – each time I step up to more storage.
Kitty Blick (verified owner) –
This is my fourth one fo these drives and they are rock solid. The reliability and speed are great for my workflow and I don’t ever consider buying other brands anymore since I discovered these. Highly recommend.

I needed a large drive to edit a project with a fair amount of footage. 8TB suited my needs. Though there are larger capacities available for this drive, the cost per GB gets steeper on the 10TB and 14TB versions. The 8TB version hits the sweet spot in terms of capacity and affordability. I also needed a drive fast enough to edit 4K 10-bit Prores 422 HQ. Read/Write speed averages 234MB/s. The case is rugged, and the rubber bumper is a nice touch. Its a tad heavy, and does make some noise, so it may not be suitable if you intend to record voice overs in the same room.

I’ve never had a failure with Glyph. These just plug in and work…and they’re solid.

I am using Glyph drives for the past 3 years. This year, I was surprised to see that there was a 12TB drive available. So far, all of the 3 drives that I have, including this one, have been working well. They do make noise (they’re not SSD), but it’s nothing to complain to about, as for the price+reliability they’re great. I know some people might have different opinions about using the drives, but Ike with every piece of computational equipment, one need to take care of it. Make sure to check for errors at least once every two weeks. And make sure to backup crucial files/projects. Going back to Glyph itself, it’s great to see this company produce good hard drives. I’m thinking about buying another 12TB, as of this writing the price is great.

I needed a compact very large drive for MacBook pros and this drive does well. The advertised thunderbolt compatibility is a bit misleading in that the drive does not have thunderbolt capability. Since all new Mac have thunderbolt 3, they will connect to this drive with no problem using USB-3 speed. (faster than the drive can read or write). Unfortunately this drive cannot be connected to an older Thunderbolt 2 computer using apples, or anyone’s, Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. I am reduced to using USB-2 to connect this drive to my older Mac Mini and a 3 hour transfer became 3 days. Also since Thunderbolt 3 can supply up to 100 W of power, it would be nice if they made these drives USB powered instead of having to lug around a power brick.
