While this hard drive is much larger/heavier than I expected (not really a practical if you’re looking for a portable drive), it’s perfect for laptop backup and photo/video storage to free up laptop/portable space. It’s also speedy! Importantly, the Glyph crew offers excellent technical support (these drives are formatted for Mac, and need an extra step to sync with a PC).

always worth buying the better drives. So far, so good!

It works ok with moderate speed. It need a complicated format proceedure to work with a pc.

When I turned on the drive and started uploading photo files I noticed it was making a noise. I called the Glyph technical support and they told me they are not buying the drives from the same vender because of the noise issue. They also told me there isn’t anything wrong with the noisy drives, but is the noise I’m hearing a normal noise or the drive failing? They are replacing my drive, but I had to pay to ship then noisy drive to them.

The unit needs to be formatted for use on a pc and you have to correctly identify the drive if you have more than one internal drive connected. Their support page required some digging to find the procedure to format for a pc. This is my second Glyph drive.

Great drives that are well built in the US. Fast enough and reliable. Very satisfied. I’ve got four going for media backups.

I think I found a hard Drive that works with my apple computer without buying extra cables. I’ll go and take some pictures and see if I can export and import than edit without it degrading the photo. So far it looks great.

This is my largest and fastest external drive. Time will tell how long it will last. It lost one star because the formatting process for pcs is too easy to make a mistake (I did) and I had reinstall data to my internal storage drive which was inadvertently formatted and it was a time consuming process.

This 8TB Blackbox is an addition to two others I already own. One functions as a master drive and the others as backups. All are connected directly to my iMac via USB-C (Thunderbolt 3). Ive found them to be fast, allowing me to access data quickly with only the slightest pause as compared to accessing data directly from my iMacs SSD internal drive. And backups written to them appear to happen quickly as well. Note that I have only used them for less than a year, but they seem to be holding up quite well. The black silicone case protection keeps any residual platter vibration that may ripple through my physical desktop where they live to a minimum. The black silicone also provides convenient notches on the top to accept the feet of another stacked above it, keeping them all in a neat stacked line.

Bought it to be a Time Machine for old Mac Mini to enable a smooth transition to new Mac Mini. Performance excellent so far.

Large enough to edit you student projects and strong enough not fail on you while you’re while working. Glyph is an excellent company and BH Photo sold it at a good price.

High capacity external hard drive. Quick transfer of data + very quiet. Excellent rubber padding makes it a bit more bulky, but so much more secure, especially when traveling. Would certainly recommend to a friend.

I can say that this is a really good external desktop drive, transfers are really fast. The drive is so high quality rugged. Truly recommended

Hi This hard drive responds quickly and writes very quickly. Very happy with this purchase.

I needed a compact very large drive for MacBook pros and this drive does well. The advertised thunderbolt compatibility is a bit misleading in that the drive does not have thunderbolt capability. Since all new Mac have thunderbolt 3, they will connect to this drive with no problem using USB-3 speed. (faster than the drive can read or write). Unfortunately this drive cannot be connected to an older Thunderbolt 2 computer using apples, or anyone’s, Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. I am reduced to using USB-2 to connect this drive to my older Mac Mini and a 3 hour transfer became 3 days. Also since Thunderbolt 3 can supply up to 100 W of power, it would be nice if they made these drives USB powered instead of having to lug around a power brick.

Need more storage and the old drives are just too small The Cupertino fruit vendor charges an arm and a leg for internal storage . The bigger the better on these Ill probably buy a back to back this up and store it at a relatives house just to safgaurd my work

I like the sturdability of the drive. I have purchased several over the years. It’s convenient for backup ang storing files and video.

I had thought a type C connection was important. WRONG. I could have purchased a smaller Western Digital and also thrown in an adapter from USB to type C for $35 less. If I had it to do over, Id own the smaller Western Digital. Also, the Glyph did not work when I attempted to backup my laptop. Technical support was very helpful and the solution was to use a different port on my laptop – even though the first port works fine for everything else. Thus Id avoid this unit.

As some of the reviewers mention, the device does make some noise while working. This is subjective, but it is not too distracting. It is solid and heavy, which is an advantage to protect valuable work. It looks appealing with rubber encasing. However, the one important detail is the reformatting to Windows. While this is not too difficult, it is not as easy as people keep saying. There was no information on the company website on how this is done. The company does assist in doing the reformatting by phone if contacted by phone.

I use this as an expansion drive on my workstation for video editing. Works great. I have it connected via the included USB-C to USB 3.0 cable. When I initially connected it to a USB 3.0 port on the PC the write speed was very slow, only 40 MB/s. Connecting it via a USB 3.0 powered hub brought the write speed up to the expected 240 MB/s.
