I bought a Gnarbox with the hope of using it while traveling. It has never worked consistently. It boots partially, then stalls. The one I have is unreliable and, for me, unusable. Tech support was not helpful. It’s an expensive black brick. Get something else.

I really was glad for my Gnarbox 2.0 when I got it a while back. Travel overseas, backing up my second shooter’s cards, was nice to have in my bag! Now… Won’t start up. The footage I most recently backed up from a second shooter is on there so now he has to mail a drive… Bummer. Would have otherwise given 3-4 stars. Kinda expensive and not that useful for most people.

I recently purchased this hoping this would solve my backup problems without needing to carry my laptop around. The device works okay however, the App for this product is not available in the App Store! It appears that after their release in 2019 and all the hype behind it they stopped updating the app and got rid of it completely. I am returning this product.

Had this for over a year and love it – works first time every time Great easy back up easy to access and edit on my iPad and post anywhere New software update excellent for cloud back up Overall made my life on the road taking and editing pictures so much easier My one minor issue is I wish software updates were easier but overall flawless love it

Purchased a 1T unit prior to a recent multi national park excursion. Set up was fairly simple. A few missteps on downloading photos to the proper file structure but those were my error, not the machine’s. Now that I have used it in the field, I’m very satisfied with the purchase. Consider packing a dedicated SSD drive with the Gnarbox and using the multi-download function to provide two copies with one download. Would recommend this to any level photographer. Especially those days of compressed shooting when returning to your computer is not practical and WiFi/Internet is not readily available. Swap out memory cards before you return to your computer and you have 3 backups. Personally, I believe in the more-is-better camp. My wife and I filled the 1TB in a week’s shooting so would recommend the 1 TB unit. This shooting only RAW. This unit now goes into the field on every outing. Excellent product.

I purchased the gearbox so that I could travel with an iPad rather than a laptop. The device arrived yesterday. I returned it today after spending four or five hours trying to get it up and running. I watched the online videos; they were out of date. I tried first on my iPadPro, and it never connected to the Wifi. I tried it on an older, smaller iPad and got it to work somewhat. The included software did not have an intuitive interface. The integration with Mobile Lightroom was marginal. It was going to be a chore to process a lot of images and store the results on the Gnarbox. The wired connection never worked. I contacted technical support, using asymmetric e-mails trying to troubleshoot the problem. After a lot of frustration, I sent the device back today. I’ll continue to travel with a laptop. Even if you get it to work, it is just too expensive of a solution given the marginal benefits. The fault really lies with Apple for not making the file system similar to a compute file system (fully accessible) and providing a way to connect a portable hard drive and SD card reader directly to the iPad–yes I know there are work arounds. Overall, this was a lousy experience.
