This compact laser project’s a vertical and horizontal line both together or independently of each other. Has a lock switch to prevent the pendulum from swinging while in transit so it will not get damaged. This unit comes with a soft carrying case, laser and 4 AA batteries. The lines width is about 1/8 of an inch wide and are bright red and crisp . The accuracy of the lines are 1/8 at 33′ . The batteries that came with his unit were protected in a cellophane wrap. Once installed I had noticed that every 10 seconds it blinks twice, looking up on the manual It reads the batteries could be low in power as I replaced with with brand new batteries it seemed to stop. This is somewhat of an annoyance to be warned that the batteries are low every 10 sec, the constant blinking, I would rather have the laser turn off rather than the constant blinking. I have used lasers for quite a while now in my trade and around the house they are the future . Accurate and reliable and as I always say purchasing at Home Depot you have a 3 month period of return, that should give any consumer confidence over a period of time to see if they like the product.

I got a chance to check out the Hilti PM 2-L Line Laser Model # 2047044. I’m not a professional tradesperson, just a homeowner/DIY’er so this review will be from that viewpoint. Pros may have different opinions. What it is – The PM 2-L is a self-leveling 2 line laser (the lines are in red on this model). It’s handy for transferring reference heights, installing suspended ceilings or lighting, pipes and conduits, doors, windows, and (my personal favorite) helping to align cabinets and hanging pictures on adjoining walls. The specs – The PM 2-L runs on four AA batteries (included in the box, along with a nifty storage/carrying case). Battery run time is said to be 20 hours; I haven’t tested that but when the batteries get low the laser line ‘blinks’. Once powered up it self balances in 3 seconds. (See owner’s manual for details). There are two laser lines available, horizontal and vertical; pressing the power button gives one, the other, or both. Hilti claims accuracy of plus or minus 1/8″ at 30 feet. They offer a calibration service (see website or user manual for details). It’s weather resistant but not water proof. Storage temperature range is -13 to +145 degrees Fahrenheit – which is a plus for me because my garage isn’t climate controlled. I frequently forget to pull gear out of my 4×4, leaving tools in it overnight even in cold weather. Operating temps are +14 to +122 degrees Fahrenheit.Dimensions are (LxWxH) 4.2″ x 2.6″ x 3.7″ and weighs just over 1 pound, batteries installed. The tripod mounting hole is a standard 1/4″ thread and Hilti makes a tripod and other mounting brackets for the PM 2-L (although they aren’t included with the tool).Fit and finish is top drawer, the body has a rubberized coating and shouldn’t be a problem in hot or cold weather, even without gloves. The case is nice – but oddly enough doesn’t have any type of belt loop. I guess I’m used to most of my tool pouches having the capability of being slung on a belt or strap of some kind and Hilti has elected not to have that feature available. The tool is made in China but the warranty is pretty good – according to the Hilti website materials and workmanship are guaranteed for 20 years against defects. Better yet, wear and tear is covered for two years. Click on the “Warranty” button on the Home Depot web page to get a link to the warranty. Of course the standard Home Depot 90-day return policy is in place too.In use – as a homeowner this is only my second ever laser level, so I’ve not a lot of experience on this type of tool. That being said, this thing works great; put it in place, power it up, select which mode you want (vertical, horizontal, or both), wait three seconds for everything to settle down and you’re in business! I’d recommend reading the user’s manual for usage and safety tips but once you’re familiar with the gadget it makes project life much easier. There is no provision for this thing being self-attached to a wall using a suction cup or mounting pins or whatever; there are accessories available from Hilti for some of that. Being an amateur photographer I have a few camera tripods laying around and the PM 2-L attaches to those beautifully. In the attached photos, tho, I just put the Hilti on top of a nearby dresser and you can see the vertical line matched nicely with a wall mounted photo frame. The Hilti is, I think, geared towards professionals – but if I was going to hang a ceiling in my basement or level the deck in the back yard this thing would have to be part of the job. It’s that functional – it removes a lot of the aggravation of aligning stuff. (Note that outside the visibility of the lines is dependent on the brightness of the day; direct sunlight makes it hard to see the laser (at least for me, YMMV)). I’ll be interested in reading reviews from the Pros, but if you’re a homeowner facing a project this thing deserves a look-see. HTHRegards,Jim
