Enable fast backups, editing, and file sharing from external peripherals such as hard drives, digital cameras, and video cameras, plus reduce the time needed to complete key tasks on select HP workstations using the Thunderbolt 3 PCIe 2-Port I/O Card from HP. Compatible with HP’s Z8 G4, Z6 G4, and Z4 G4 Tower Workstations, Thunderbolt 3 uses the reversible USB Type-C connector and offers bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. Thunderbolt 3 also transmits data and 15W of power via 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2. Thunderbolt 3 supports both data (PCIe) and video (DisplayPort) using one cable connection that can daisy-chain up to six devices together.
Aside from Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C connectivity, this card offers two DisplayPort inputs for connecting displays. It is also compatible with NVIDIA Quadro P5000, Quadro 4000, Quadro 2000, and AMD WX7100 graphics cards. HP’s Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card does have specific PCIe slot requirements for proper operations. When used with the Z8 G4, it must be installed in slot 1, while the Z6 G4 requires slot 6 and the Z4 G4 requires slot 4. If you have 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt 2 or 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt devices, those may be used with an adapter.
HP’s Thunderbolt 3 PCIe 2-Port I/O Card requires Windows 10 Pro (64-bit). Included are two DisplayPort cables and general-purpose input/output cables. Protection is provided by either a limited 1-year warranty, or the remainder of the HP-supported product in which it is installed, plus 24/7 tech support, which is available by phone and in online forums.

There’s a lot of issues with Thunderbolt add-in PCIe cards not working when installed in general. But this card was installed on a HP Z4-G4 Workstation without any issues. The key is to make sure you follow the included installation instructions. It must be installed on a specific slot and it varies depending on the Z model you have. I have connected an LG 34UM88-P display with a Promise Pegasus3 R4 Raid5 storage system for video editing with Adobe Premiere. Workstation is extremely stable.

Was on tech support for hours, checked BIOS, Chipset drivers, etc. and it does not find drivers to support despite installing Thunderbolt drivers from HP. I also received what looked like a re-sale from someone else as it was packaged with someone else’s address in the wrapper. HP needs to get it together, and B&H needs to call HP and get this resolved before selling more of this product.

If you’re using an HP Z4 G4 workstation, this Thunderbolt adapter card is your only choice. It does work but with the major limitation that it is not hot plug / hot swappable. If you plug a device into it, you will have to restart the workstation before it is recognized. The other thing to be aware of is that there is a Thunderbolt Security Level setting in the BIOS that can be set to DisplayPort and USB only so if you’re trying to plug some other type of device into the adapter card and getting nowhere, this could be your problem. The setting (and all BIOS settings) is also configurable using the HP Performance Advisor software. Go to Advanced Device Configurations Thunderbolt Security Level to check or change the setting.

I followed all instructions as per HP’s website and had absolutely no issues. Working perfect with my Windows 10, z8 g4 workstation and UAD Apollo x6.

The instructions were clear and the installation was straightforward. I was up and running in less than 10 minutes with an industrial Thunderbolt system connected to my Z4 G4 workstations.

Installed in HP Z4 G4 and drivers and firmware installed automatically. Is important to follow pre-installation instructions in include manual.

Bought these for a project at my job. We have a team of video engineers that are top notch. They were unable to get these card to work, without intermittent failures. We worked with HP Support to trouble shoot the problem and after many hours we eventually gave up. At the end of it all, we had to change workflow to avoid using Thunderbolt storage devices. This caused pain to our client and embarrassment for my colleagues and I. These card will go on a shelf and never be used again.
