The 30TB LTO-8 Ultrium RW Data Cartridge from HPE has been tested to meet demands for high levels of reliability when restoring data. It offers a high storage density, ease of management, and scalable storage and backup performance with an archival life of up to 30 years. Uncompressed, it offers a storage capacity of 12TB and read speeds of up to 360 MB/s, but thanks to a 2.5:1 compression factor, it can deliver a storage capacity of 30TB and read speeds of up to 700 MB/s, or 2.7TB per hour. This media is rewritable, as compared to WORM (write once, read many), and to help keep your data secure, features FIPS 140-2 Level 1 and AES 256-bit encryption. Write-on labels are included in the box and protection is provided by a limited lifetime warranty and 24/7 toll-free phone support.

Purchased 5 tapes to see how they would work. 2 of the tapes seem fine and jobs run mostly at 300 MB/s for 95% of task until completion. 3 of the tapes did not work out of the box. The best part is that 1 of the tapes was disassembled without ever touching the tape drive and showed signs of heavy wear on the first 10 meters or so of tape. Don’t know where these tapes came from, but my association with HP just ended — permanently. No problem with B&H Foto — will continue to shop here — but be wary of these data cartridges. They can give your tape drive fits.
