I decided to get into wood turning and did a lot of research and talking to local woodworking store experts, I finally landed on this Jet 21in Variable speed lathe because it allows finer control over speed, something that is very important when learning to turn. The weight helps keep the machine more stable than say a smaller pen lathe, sure its pretty basic out of the box but a few quick additions like a Nova G3 reversible chuck and a drill chuck really open up the possibilities for this machine. I’ve begun learning my adventure with just 4 turning tools, a skew, a rough gouge, a spindle gouge, and a parting tool. I have been very happy with this machine so far, its quiet, easy to setup each session, and even though i have yet to bolt it to the cart I built it hasn’t vibrated or moved any. It did come set to high on the belt, after a quick talk with an expert he suggested I switch to medium and stick to low/mid speeds. The only complaint I have is you have to remove any tools from the left rack on the machine when you need to access the belt to change the torque, but then honestly thats not going to be often if you really only need and use the medium setting like I was told to.

I bought this lathe 2 years and 2 months ago. Intermittently, it was throwing up an E7 error on the display. It wasn’t a big problem, so I just lived with it. Two weeks ago, the Reverse switch no longer worked.So I called Technical Support (on Dec. 21) to report both problems. The technician walked me through the solution to the E7 error (clean the sensor on the motor, which was very easy). He also determined that I needed a new switch – covered under warranty. It was shipped to me in two days, and I installed it with no problems. My reverse worked again.However, the motor started running very fitfully, and eventually would throw up an E8 error. So back to Technical Support (on Dec. 27) to report this error. Again, another technician diagnosed the problem as a defective control module, and he said it would also be covered under warranty. The module will be received on Dec. 29, and I will be back in business.Even though the product had some failures, I’m very happy with the level of technical support, and also very happy that it has a 5-yr warranty.

I love my new lathe. It’s so quiet and for me a big improvement from using my Shopsmith. It was perfect out of the box and went onto the Jet stand that I purchased perfectly. It seems to work great for the stuff that I make (bowls, pens, cups, etc.). Variable speed works great, belt changes are easy

Im mainly a furniture maker but occasionally need to turn a spindle for a piece i’m working on so I picked up the Jet 1221 VS. I also picked up the bed extension so that I can turn longer pieces. This lathe is a fantastic lathe for beginners and also for the furniture maker that’s looking for a lathe like I did. It has plenty of speed and the variable speed dial makes turning the lathe down super simple.Overall it’s been a great lathe and i’ve had no issues with it

This is my first lathe, I researched many many lathes and finally selected the jet 1221vs. It had all the features I wanted in a lathe. I have not turned a bowl yet, but I have turned several spindle projects, and really like the variable speed. The ease of changing speed ranges could not be easier. The 1 hp motor performs as expected, I have not bogged down the motor yet. Overall one great lathe.

This lathe is high end and has all the features of more expensive ones. It came right out of the box ready to use with minimal assembly. The lathe base was not flat and had to be shimmed but otherwise very easy to set up and use.

Fantastic lathe! Lots of torque for larger projects. I also have a Jet drill press and bandsaw and believe they are worth the money! It arrived about 4 days early at the store. However, Home Depot said that the military discount did not apply to online orders. 🙁
