If all you want is to find a metal nail or screw to pinpoint a stud, this item is with it. It will not give you the stud edges; that is for the DIY to do. But, the red “tilter” must be free to move; otherwise, it is defective. Had a defective one; returned it for another; second one was perfect. For the cost, minimal cost, quite handy.

I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH THIS JOHNSON STUD FINDER. THE ADDITION OF THE LEVEL VIAL IS VERY HELPFUL. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE BACK OF THE CARD. WHEN I USE THIS STUD FINDER VERY CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY, IT FINDS THE CENTER OF THE WALL STUDS VERY WELL. PLEASE NOTE, THE WIDTH OF THIS STUD FINDER IS THE SAME WIDTH AS THE NARROW WIDTH OF MOST WALL STUDS. IT IS VERY WELL PRICED AND QUALITY MADE.

I find that the thickness of the wall covering has much to do with the reliability of the stud finder. I would recommend this stud finder. We use it to mount and level wall fixtures such as pictures.

It works, I wouldn’t recommend this thing anymore than a regular magnet though. It isn’t strong enough to hold itself to the drywall with the magnet that’s in it. The magnet is small than in other magnetic stud finders I’ve used. It is helpful in finding the exact location of the drywall screw.
