What a beast! This carbide tipped hole cutter by Klein tools is beastly awesome! Cuts a 1-1/8 inch (29 mm) diameter hole quickly and with precision in stainless, copper, mild steel, iron, and brass up to 3/16 of an inch (5 mm) thick. The pilot bit is surrounded by a spring to help remove the material from cutting the hole. The pilot bit can also be replaced with items number 31874 from Klein tools. If you need to cut holes in metal, then this bit is for you!

I just picked up this 1-1/8 in. Carbide Hole Cutter, by Klein Tools, for drilling 1-1/8 in. holes in a custom control panel for an auxiliary generator set. The steel I chose for the custom panel is a hardened steel and the regular hole saws fail to cut it. Where most hole cutters have a heavy mandrill holding a stamped steel cutter, this cutter is a one piece casting with welded on carbide teeth and a replaceable pilot drill bit. The cutter also has a coil spring to eject the drilled out material. This bit, like all carbide tipped tools needs to be turned slowly to avoid blade damage per the included chart. Also a reminder not to reverse the direction of rotation if the cutter gets stuck in the workpiece. Very sharp and fast cutting, makes my day.

Comes in a nice protective package to protect the bit. Easily attaches to drill of choice. Makes nice tidy holes without splintering. The starting tip help to preventing walking of the bit during starts. Teeth make easy work of any material you use it on. The hole is smaller than you think though, make sure you measure. The teeth also help to remove the chewed up pieces so it does not get jammed up. Only downside is the material gets stuck within the hole when you are finished.

This is a sturdy, useful item to have in your tool box. We plan to build some yard furniture this spring for our new home and think this hole cutter will come in very handy. While we haven’t used it yet, the quality looks very good and I will update this review if we find anything to the contrary when the weather warms up and we get around to our projects.

I used this hole cutter to make a hole in one-eighth inch thick aluminum panel. I used it in a drill press. I used a water-based cutting and drilling fluid to keep the bit cool and prevent build-up of the metal on the cutting bit itself. The cutter/bit cut through the panel very quickly. The hole was complete in just a few seconds. One recommendation I would make for use of this cutter is to be certain to wear hearing protection. In my case at least, it made an extremely loud, almost painful, screeching noise as it cut, probably because the panel acted as a kind of sounding board, effectively amplifying the the sound produced by the cutting activity.

The 1-1/8 IN. CARBIDE HOLE CUTTER is a great tool to work with. It is extremely sharp and the edge last for many cuttings. I used it to cut holes through my rafters to run all types of coated wire as well as conduit. I use all my sizes of drills to run the bit. It runs cool without any burning where it is cutting. I would recommend this drill bit to anyone needing hole that size.

Klein Tools Carbide Hole Cutter makes quick work of cutting extra holes in need electrical boxes where needed in tight spaces. The tool is very well made & is heavy in the hand. You notice the carbide cutting teeth are very sharp indeed. When used correctly cuts quickly & very efficiently with very little burs. I even kept the little plastic box handy to keep it stored when I am not using it. Glad I was afforded the opportunity to get this. You will too.

This is a very heavy weighted tool. With proper care this should last a very long time. The fact that you can change out the pilot drill bit will increase the longevity of this tool. I would recommend keeping the bit it a protective case so it does not get beat up being with other tools. Be sure to use this and similar tools with all the proper safety precautions as you can lose an eye very easily.
