Needed a tool to turn the top vent on my Weber grill, while it’s hot. Wanted something cool looking. The Klein Tools 3-1/2’’ steel scratch awl was the perfect choice. Drilled a small hole in the vent ‘handle’ & the awl fits in to about where the black paint stops. Turns the vent with ease. Perfect.

Fantastic item. This was a replacement for the one that I misplaced. I had the last one over 20 years.—Jim K

The Klein Steel Scratch Awl was a hand tool that I had for a very long time which I used to help with a variety of projects. One day I went to look for the tool and could not find the Klein scratch awl, used a substitute which did not work as well. I went to HD store and asked a HD associate if a hand tool as described was in stock to no avail. Tried other outlets with the same results, bought a substitute that did not hold up and it went into the garbage. Later browsing HD’s website looking through all the available awls I found my missing Awl and ordered the Klein steel scratch awl. It performs; the best is it’s made in the USA.

I purchase this Scratch Awl because a Co-worker had one from 20 years ago and it has held up. Excellent for center punch and marking!

I use this awl to tack or bore sink everything on materials ranging from leather, wood, aluminum and drywall. It is sharp and the tip comes to a rather fine point, so I am careful on harder metals, and thus only really scribe with it, in those instances. I also sheath the tool when it’s not in use. But, I keep several around for tasks. When I am setting anchors in drywall, I just use this awl, and a few wacks with the palm of my hand to fully form holes to seat the anchors, or to make starter holes to beams. No dust !4 stars only for price and the lack of sheath included. But I take care of my gear, and this is a solid addition.

No matter what you’re planning to buy because it’s cheeper, you have to see this tool to appreciate the additional cost. It’s worth the extra money.
