This step drill bit is like having a drill index that I can carry in my tool pouch! It is great for drilling because of the non-walking tip or for enlarging the diameter of existing holes in wood, fiberglass, poly-plastic or even thin sheet metal. Each step of the 3/8-inch shank drill bit increases the hole diameter by a sixteenth, all the way up to 3/4-inch. This uni-bit can also be used to chamfer or deburr previously drilled holes by going up to the next diameter momentarily. This is my “go-to” tool for enlarging power connection openings on lighting fixtures; each cutting edge on the dual flute relief cuts fast and cleanly. Just keep the power tool rpm and applied pressure lower when drilling metal stock and use a little cutting lube to prevent grabbing.

Wow! The Klein Tools #3, 1/4 in. to 3/4 in. Double Fluted Step Drill Bit works great. In the past, I purchased several of the cheap knock-off step drill bits, but they become dull very quickly. The quality and durability of this Klein Tools drill bit is top notch. I am thrilled that I don’t have to switch out drill bits when making different size holes, or when drilling different types of material. This drill bit makes projects quicker and easier to complete. The holes come out very clean. I would recommend the Klein ¼” to ¾” Double Fluted Drill Bit.

Okay, maybe I’ve been using these step drills wrong all my life. I have a cheap set and have been using them to cut countersinks in wood. But after I received the Klein bits, I researched them a bit and found that they were a lot more versatile! They can cut their own pilot holes, great for sheet steel, and eliminate the hole drilling bits I already have, and hate.Like I said, I already have a set of step drills, but compared to the Klein, they seem clunky and not as sharp and not as clean. Besides the Klein bits are clearly marked on both sides, and they have hex shafts to keep them securely in your hand drill.

Great product nice and sharp. The two parts I like the most about this is the chiseled point that did not allow the point to wonder, I tried this first on a piece of PVC pipe expecting it to slide all over the place, it did not, it stayed right were I put it and started the drill. The second feature I really like is the silver bands at 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 making it very easy to see the size of the hole you are drilling. Basically a silver band at those depths/sizes against a black background.A very sharp and we built tool, glad I got this.

The Klein step drill bit #3 will drill 9 different sized holes. It will cover the following sizes, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 7/16″, 1/2″, 9/16″, 5/8′, 11/16″ and 3/4″. The metric range is 6.4mm-19.1mm. It has a 3/8″ hexagon shank so will fit just about any drill or chuck and not spin inside the chuck. This is also a money saver since you dont have to buy 9 seperate drill bits.I used this to drill a hole in a metal door for a peep hole. Once I started a small hole threw the metal door, I used each step until I had the 9/16″ hole I needed, then did same on other side of the door. The hole was very smoothe thanks to the two flutes that cut the material. I wish I had this bit earlier this sumer when I made a tetherball pole and had to drill a couple of holes in a metal fence post. The regular twist bits were not near as smoothe as this was.Another thing I like about this bit, is the different sizes are labeled on the flute cut out so you dont have to memorize the 4th slot is 7/16″ or the 8th is 11/16″. The tip is very sharp and does not walk around which is nice. Buy it, you will not ne disappointed.

I work with wood and metal and use a lot of different types of fasteners. They all need holes drilled at some point and at times having the proper bit is between sizes so that’s when the Klein Step bit comes in handy. Whether you use it in a drill or drill press, all you need do is lower the step bit into the previously drill hole and then go one step further. My drill bit box just got a new member,

There are a lot of step drill bits out there but the Klein #3 step drill bit takes it to the next level. This drill bit is a high quality, durable and sharp bit. The extra feature I love is the various bit sizes are printed within the grooves in the bit. It is easy to identify which level is the one that you need to make the size hole you need to drill. So if you are looking to consolidate your tools, this step drill bit will cover your needs from 1/4 to 3/4 inch.

I have owned several sets of step drills over the years, from the original Unibit to several cheap Harbor Freight, but these are far and away my favorite. They are very well-made (definitely not surprising, since they are made by Klein), but they have a couple of features that really set them apart. In the past, it has always been a challenge to remember which step I want to finish on, but they have solved that by putting a dark oxide finish on all the steps except for every 4th step on the small one, and 4th and 2nd steps on the larger. That is SO much better than putting sharpie marks on the step I want to use, or putting tape on the level above where I should finish. They also have 3/8” hex shanks, so there is no danger of the bit slipping in the chuck. As you can see from the picture below, I put the larger one in my lathe and drilled out a ¾” hole in a 1/2” thick piece of steel stock. That is definitely not how they are typically used, but it handled it perfectly, and the edges are still as sharp as when I started.

This step drill bit is a nice one to have. The two flutes remove chips quickly and easily. The 3/8” hex shaft will fit a variety of drills. I drilled metal and fiberglass with this bit, and it worked well. The cutting edge seams to be sharp. We will have to see after drilling a lot of holes. The size is nice and compact for easy storage in a tool pouch.

Works great for making or enlarging a hole in an electrical panel or box.Eliminates carrying a bunch of loose drill bits for those couple of holes needed at a job.Overall length is 2 7/8″ with a 5/16″ hex drive. Locks in well to my 3/8″ cordless drill. The steps are 5/32″ tall – good for < 1/8" thick panel or box.The double flutes don't bind up or stick in aluminum or steel. Just use light pressure and let it cut. Don't force it or you will end up counter boring the hole with the next size.Common hole sizes 3/8" 1/2" and 3/4" are easy to see on the bit (9 steps from 1/4" to 3/4" in 1/16"). Minimum hole is 1/4" for this #3 bit.
