With a capacity of 1TB, the Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie marries a USB 3.0 Type-C interface and data transfer speeds of up to 130 MB/s with rugged durability that provides a drop resistance of up to 4′, crush resistance of up to 1 ton, and rain resistance, making this drive suitable for all-terrain storage, whether you’re in the field or in your home. It can be used to store large Lightroom libraries, as a shuttle drive to transport footage from a set to a post-production house, or just for general tasks.
LaCie’s 1TB Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive is compatible with Windows 7 and later and macOS 10.12 and later, but should also work on earlier versions of macOS, such as 10.9 and 10.11. It is powered using the USB bus, meaning that no external power adapters are required for use. Included is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C cable, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C to Type-A cable, and two years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services. General protection is provided by a limited 2-year warranty.

This is a wonderful external drive. I own three of them and also three of the older, 2TB drives with Thunderbolt and Micro-USB 3.0 connections. All have proved to be absolutely reliable and fast enough for simultaneous playback of multiple high-resolution videos. I haven’t tried dropping one onto a concrete sidewalk from the top of a tall building, but the orange bumper around the drive certainly provides plenty of protection against ordinary wear and tear. (As I said, I’ve never had one fail.) The bumper also provides good friction, so that the drive will sit on any surface without slipping. It also means there’s no need to keep the drive in a separate case. Lacie originally made drives predominantly for MACs, and those who used the older drives may have experience some minor inconvenience installing them on PCs. But these new drives are completely plug-and-play. Also, on the older drives, the orange bumper extended too close the USB socket, so that the connection was not perfectly tight. This has also been corrected on the newer modes. Overall, a great drive.

No problems at all on a new late 2018 MacBook Air. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is I have two 320 gig LaCie hard drives I cant get into anymore and I cant figure out how to fix that problem through LaCies website.

Love this HD. The 5TB is smaller and lighter than the 4TB – good thing! It also runs more quiet and less hot than my previous 4TB. The only thing is the Type-C connector comes easy off so that is a minus especially if you are out and about in rugged terrain and not just on your desk. Overall a great, great portable HD for a good price. Highly recommended!

The hard-drive itself isn’t rugged but has a rubber enclosure to protect it, presumably from drops of a few feet. I wouldn’t huck it out the window of a moving vehicle, but I’m not sure your external drive needs that level of durability. What you’re getting here is a solid, sensible, functional increase in your storage space at a reasonable price. I am using it to store large (7gb) photoshop working files so that my MacBook doesn’t get bogged down. Working well so far…
