With a capacity of 1TB, the Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie marries a USB 3.0 Type-C interface and data transfer speeds of up to 130 MB/s with rugged durability that provides a drop resistance of up to 4′, crush resistance of up to 1 ton, and rain resistance, making this drive suitable for all-terrain storage, whether you’re in the field or in your home. It can be used to store large Lightroom libraries, as a shuttle drive to transport footage from a set to a post-production house, or just for general tasks.
LaCie’s 1TB Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive is compatible with Windows 7 and later and macOS 10.12 and later, but should also work on earlier versions of macOS, such as 10.9 and 10.11. It is powered using the USB bus, meaning that no external power adapters are required for use. Included is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C cable, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C to Type-A cable, and two years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services. General protection is provided by a limited 2-year warranty.

I’ve always been fond of LaCie hard drives in the past and my older model is doing well. Unfortunately this hard drive that I recently purchased does not do well with my new mac book. It self-ejects itself from my Macbook whenever my screen is idol for more than 15min, even when I have an adobe project open linked to it. Often disconnecting all the footage and leaving me without an option to save. I updated the external drive per LaCie’s suggestion but no luck as of now. Not at all a reflection on B&H, just a software hiccup that’s unfortunate.

Great so far. I like the small size and portability. The cable snaps into place on the computer and is tough to disconnect. I think that this is deliberate to maintain connection, but different than any other cable that I’ve experienced. Not bad, just different. I do wish the cable was integrated (permanently attached to the drive), as the thunderbolt 2 cables on the Lacie Rugged’s were.

I now have three of these gems, two 1TB and a 2TB models. One I used to backup my photo laptop, one I used for the Lightroom catalog, and the last I use to hold photos I shoot when I’m on the road. No issues, and I like the look of durability.

I have two of these units, each of which came with their own /USB-C connectors I use with my Mac. The units cannot make a secure connection, if you look at the connection the wrong way, it disconnects. When trying to reconnect it takes extremely long usually up to 20 minutes. Other devices I have no issues with….until Lacie fixes the issue, I definitely would not recommend these units. When they are connected, one unit works OK, the other is extremely slow. Lacie has not been able to determine why one is so slow, all home tests show nothing is wrong with it.

I have been using Ruggeds for years for documentary work, and I’m always impressed at their easily packable size + durability in some hard-to-report locations. I’m usually in a rush when I work with these drives but have had no problems (knock on wood) offloading tons of media at the end of the day on these drives. It really lives up to its advertised benefits. This is truly rugged. It has been dropped on the rocks on several outings and still works just as it did right out of the box. I’m a believer. The drive suddenly failed and stopped working completely while I was using it. Ive never dropped it and Ive only had it for 4 about 4 months. I was in the middle of a project so I decided to open it and try to fix it myself, which ruined the warranty, and I wasnt surprised about the incident once I found out its actually just a Seagate drive inside a LaCie case…. Goodbye LaCie.
