With a capacity of 4TB, the Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie marries a USB 3.0 Type-C interface and data transfer speeds of up to 130 MB/s with rugged durability that provides a drop resistance of up to 4′, crush resistance of up to 1 ton, and rain resistance, making this drive suitable for all-terrain storage, whether you’re in the field or in your home. It can be used to store large Lightroom libraries, as a shuttle drive to transport footage from a set to a post-production house, or just for general tasks.
LaCie’s 4TB Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive is compatible with Windows 7 and later and macOS 10.12 and later, but should also work on earlier versions of macOS, such as 10.9 and 10.11. It is powered using the USB bus, meaning that no external power adapters are required for use. Included is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C cable, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C to Type-A cable, and two years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services. General protection is provided by a limited 2-year warranty.

This drive is awesome. The only complaint I have is the thunderbolt cable easily disconnects from the port. I think it’s an Apple issue, not a LaCie one.

As far as external drives go, this is the best one I’ve had. It’s reliable, feels durable, and connects via USB-C. After two bad experiences with Western Digital drives, I’m staying with Seagate/LaCie. Both this drive and my 500GB Seagate external HDD are my daily drivers, and I’ve yet to experience any data reading/writing problems. There’s just one quirk with this drive. When I connect to my MacBook using the USB Type-C-to-Type-C cable, the drive will start to disconnect itself at semi-regular intervals after a few minutes. This only happens on my Mac; my PC laptop is immune to this problem. I reached out to LaCie, and they recommended trying a different cable. When I connect with the USB Type-A-to-Type-C cable, the problem goes away. I assume it’s either just the cable or my computer, but I figured I might as well throw that experience out there. Overall, all I have to say is: Don’t regret buying cheap crap. Just get a LaCie Rugged drive and you won’t have to worry about losing anything.

The hard drive is basically bullet proof, and noticeably sturdier than anything else. I have like four of them for various projects, and now I can’t go back to anything flimsier. I feel like I can crush other hard drives if I look at it wrong. It’s a bit expensive, but if you’re already paying for Adobe CC every month as are most photographers, and can therefore include the savings from the free month voucher, then this hard drive effectively costs about as much as those cheaper, flimsier models I mentioned earlier. So it’s basically a no brained to get this.

I am currently using two other LaCie Rugged hard drives that are over 10 years old. The latest LaCie I purchased for larger storage was a LaCie 4TB Rugged USB Type C External Hard Drive. My past and present experiences with LaCie hard drives are that they are fast, reliable and durable and give you peace of mind that they are not so fragile and susceptible to damage, like competitive drives. I love LaCie hard drives and SSD’s. This 5TB hard drive is as solid as a rock. I have gotten rid of all of my other drives and ONLY use the LaCie Rugged drives now. I use Adobe Premiere Pro on my Mac Pro (late 2013) computer and my LaCie rugged drives are a perfect fit. LaCie uses Seagate drives which has been a very dependable drive for me for many years. Seagate has been around since 1979.
