With a capacity of 5TB, the Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie marries a USB 3.0 Type-C interface and data transfer speeds of up to 130 MB/s with rugged durability that provides a drop resistance of up to 4′, crush resistance of up to 1 ton, and rain resistance, making this drive suitable for all-terrain storage, whether you’re in the field or in your home. It can be used to store large Lightroom libraries, as a shuttle drive to transport footage from a set to a post-production house, or just for general tasks.
LaCie’s 5TB Rugged USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive is compatible with Windows 7 and later and macOS 10.12 and later, but should also work on earlier versions of macOS, such as 10.9 and 10.11. It is powered using the USB bus, meaning that no external power adapters are required for use. Included is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C cable, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C to Type-A cable, and two years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services. General protection is provided by a limited 2-year warranty.

There isn’t much to say about this drive. I plugged it in and it worked as it is supposed to work. I’ve little problem with it. I gave it four stars because sometimes I get a message in Windows that there is a problem with the drive. I have not experienced a problem beyond receiving those messages, so the issue my have more to do with an old usb hub than with the drive itself.

I was considering a SSD, but at less than $200 for 5 TB this is really good value. It is a Seagate drive. Great interface and the perfect storage for Time Machine. It is the size of a cigarette pack. Included cables are USB C to USB C and USB C to USB A. The data rate for a USB A connection is very low but who cares for a backup? It is USB and it operates off your computer’s power. It would also would be great for portable video storage in the field as it is ruggedized.

I don’t know if I received a defective one but mine never stays connected. The USB 3 port on the hard drive is very loose. If I even slightly bump my desk or move my laptop it disconnects. Any time I plug it in I have to try it a few times until the flashing light comes on… I’ve gone back to using an older LaCie and a an adapter so it works with my new Mac book…

Not sure why but (!) am getting a … I missed the 32 day return call to B&H! I feel sad because I heard so much great things… it wouldn’t Mount to my macbook 16 .. I may not now too much tech but I can follow instructions on boss.

I’m so happy I purchased it. I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro as well as my iMac . It was very essential that I upgraded my external hard drive to be compatible with the USB-C type connections. The difference in upload and download speeds are unmatched. It makes the transferring of files a breeze. Definitely recommend this brand. The durable built and feel of the hard drive puts me at ease knowing that all my data will be safe and secure. 10/10!

I have had several hard drives and this one I can throw in a bag and not have to be concerned. The rugged durability also makes it not concerning if I have an accidental coffee spill near by. Had an older version of this as well 10 years ago and still working like a champ

I should have listened to the other reviews. This drive is utter garbage. I just received it yesterday from B&H and immediately upon plugging it in, I started experiencing disconnect issues. I did nothing except plug it in and go to get some other drives to move data off of. So I figure it could be a format thing, I’ll just format it to MacOS like my other drives and my computer will stop losing connections with it, right? Wrong! Even after formatting the drive I still experienced disconnects. Not just one or two. But if I left this drive plugged in, it would essentially just cycle off and on and i’d get warnings on my computer saying that the drive was disconnected. So, maybe it’s just a cable issue. I was using the brand new cable that came with the drive in the box – which presumably would be a working, quality cable. But in the interest of eliminating all possible variables, I decided to try another usb-c cable, also brand new (from another drive which works great). Same issue! So, in summary: This drive constantly disconnects. It’s unreliable, defective, garbage. I would never trust my data on this drive. Lucky for me, I discovered this before ever moving one byte of data onto the drive! Immediately contact B&H support and sent it back for a refund. Take it from me, don’t buy this drive. Clearly LaCie thinks they can just ride on their reputation and not deliver a quality working product. AVOID.

I use these for backing up files. Really love the capacity and also the look of this drive. Great fit to my work flow and doesn’t take up a lot of room in my workspace. Been using LaCie drives for more than twenty years and they have been my “go-to” drives.
