I’ve had nothing but great experiences with these hard drives. I’ve been using them for almost a decade.

I bought this drive because of a) LaCie reputation for quality, 2) RAID 1 protects from single drive failure and 3) ruggedized construction so my client could back up data at the office and take the drive home safely . We were running a full backup on Saturday at the office, and the client was taking the drive home on Sunday for offsite safe keeping for the week. When taking the drive home, he would disconnect the power plug and then place the drive in his handbag to take home. All was working fine for a couple of weeks. Then my client said the drive kept losing power and he had to press the power plug / adapter into the socket vey tightly to maintain power. About 2 weeks after that he called and said the drive was not powering up any more, and that the AC adapter power plug was now totally loose in the power socket. I had him send me the drive. When I looked at it, I saw that the pin inside the AC / power jack in the drive had broken off. I sent the unit back for replacement and received a new unit. I wanted to test the replacement unit before sending it back to my client, so I plugged in the power connector, and then connected the USB connector to my PC. The power plug was fully plugged into the AC jack, but it did not seem to be tight. When I first plugged it in, I saw that the main LED light was blinking rapidly, meaning the drive wasn’t getting enough power via the USB port, which is not USB 3.0. I had to then press the power plug in very tightly and at that point the rapid blinking stopped, and the drive showed up in my Windows Explorer. This was the same situation that my client experienced, and I saw it was now repeating. I have now called BH Photo and the customer service was very accommodating and will allow me to exchange the LaCie with another product. I hope LaCie can address what is obviously a serious design flaw in the power connector. It is disappointing, because the unit otherwise had everything I was looking for.

The SD port is a handy addition to this sturdy hard drive, considering computers are getting smaller and there are fewer built in ports. Using it as a backup drive for a two-camera 4K shoot and it’s a very streamlined way to drop footage for backup. The only drawback is I’m seeing some lagging when watching footage playback on a very fast MacBook Pro.

…for a compact, complete backup drive to an iMac. All that I could have asked for

You have to plug this in to power. Hard to do when you don’t have any.

I bought this to replace a GTech 2Tb. I was a little iffy about the price, but it works like a dream. I would definitely buy this again. Durable, fast, and tons of storage space. I don’t usually shoot 4K raw, but when I do, it can handle it. Also it COMES WITH AN SD READER. As a mac user, this takes down the amount of peripherals I need to bring to set. A lot of power for not needing an outlet.

This new generation of Lacie has to be plugged in to an electrical outlet to function at all. I was not aware of tis factor when buying and makes it rather useless for when I am on the road and do not necessarily have an outlet handy. If this is not a factor for you, it’s fine.
