The 8TB d2 Professional USB 3.1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie features a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port that’s compatible with Thunderbolt 3 devices. In case your system isn’t equipped with a Type-C port, it comes with a Type-C to Type-A adapter.
Inside is a Seagate BarraCuda Pro enterprise-class drive, which spins at 7200 rpm and offers data transfer rates of up to 260 MB/s. The drive is pre-formatted as exFAT, which allows for compatibility with both macOS and Windows systems. If you’re using the drive with only one operating system, you optimize the drive’s performance by reformatting it as NFTS for Windows or HFS+/APFS for macOS.
In addition to its warranty, this drive includes a five-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan as well as a one-month membership to Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan.

I’ve owned several d2’s in the past — all quality purchases. My early view of my new 14TB d2 Pro’s is they are large capacity; solid and fast performers; exceptionally quiet; warmer to the touch after extended read/write sessions — but not of concern; and without any other setting or intervention they automatically sleep and wakeup soon after my Mac does. In my opinion, you get what you pay for and these are worth every penny. The only downside is the blue status light is B-R-I-G-H-T enough to light a dark room at night and can be distracting if they are blinking while you’re trying to sleep even down the hall, or if you have them running perhaps in an office when people outside will think the Martians have invaded the place with the bright blue blink-blink-blink. I placed a piece of dimming film over the light and I still have a visual status what’s going on with the drive, but without the nighttime glare.

I had expected this to be much quieter – I realize it’s a mechanical drive, but I thought that the housing would block the sounds.

Keeps randomly disconnecting. Did basic trouble shooting, all other of my drives work perfectly (non-Lacie brand). Super disappointed, going to try to return & get a different one. Not risking my data!

The bright blue light on the front is the on-off switch. I almost didn’t buy this due to other reviews saying there was no switch. I received mine 2/9/2022 for a point of reference. I was also expecting typical mechanical drive sounds from it, but it is very quiet! I ran some random file transfer tests and it averaged round 225 MB/s writing to the 10TB d2 through my USB-C port with very little variance. I did laugh when I saw how bright and distracting the blue light in the on-off switch was once it started flashing to show drive activity. The main casing is aluminum and very sturdy and it has many small rubber feet on the bottom to isolate it from your desk top. For three bills, this is a great purchase.

Over the course of 17 tears I have used LaCie Hard Drives and have had only 1 out of 12 fail me. Quality hard drives

I’ve always had great experiences with LaCie and this new drive is no exception. I am MAC-based and find these drives to be easy to set up and extra Upload ordinarily reliable. At the risk of jinxing myself, I have never had a LaCie drive fail even under heavy use. I have added this to 3 others I have that still function perfectly to accommodate a growing need for a larger drive for my time machine automated backups. I always rely on B&H for my needs. The prices are always competitive and the selection and service are excellent.

This is smaller than the older version and sleek looking. Had a problem setting it up (my fault) and the customer service was quick and easy.

Using as a time machine backup. Not sure how fast it is for other usage but I do wish it also supported thunderbolts so I could have connected to by TB LaCie 2Big directly.

I just started using this for photo backup.and I haven’t used it much yet. It runs very quietly. It was ready for my MAC right out of the box with no prior formatting. Seagate and Lacie have always worked well for me with no problems. I have a Lacie drive that is going on 12 years and it has never failed. I use drives as an archive and not daily use (10-150 times a year) and never had a hint of problems. I have had hubs fail but never a Lacie or Seagate drive failure. I fear data loss and every piece of data backed up on at least 2 drives some data on 3 drives.

I needed something that I could just set up and leave to dom it’s job and 10Tb was the perfect solution as my computer hard drive was getting slow and overloaded, so my work gets transferred and then backs up to another hard drive.

This drive failed after only 10 months of use. I use it to archive my photographs so it’s not turned on and connected to my computer very often, yet it failed. It gets quite hot when in operation too.

reliable, easy to connect and use, performs well

Plugged it to my mac and it worked problem free. Copy and write speed from computer to Lacie is as advertised. No issue with the product.

Have this hooked up via USB-A to USB-C on a Mac Pro (late 2013). Getting ~220 MB/s actual speeds. Drive is super easy to use, is very quiet and feels like a quality component (heavy). Overall, I’m very happy with it.

I bought this to use on my 27inch Imac and so far it works great. No problems.

I bought a new Mac Mini M1 with a 256GB hard drive that would have cost around $800 to upgrade to the size of HDD I need. I have been using LaCie for years and added this 4TB HDD for a quarter of the cost of an Apple upgrade. This one (like other LaCie units) is easy to set up and works as advertised.

Very nice set up but also very slow. I don’t understand the speed up for two minutes then completely stop for a minute. This is the continuous mode of operation. This makes it very difficult to transfer data files from other devices.

LaCie is a name I trust. Works great. Looks great!

I love these drives in the 4-6tb configurations. I purchased the 10tb configuration cause B&H was sold out of the smaller ones. This drive works for storage but for video and raw photo processing… I think its too much of a workload for this amount of storage. I’ll stick to the smaller amounts of storage theyre working better for me. I own 6 of these.

I like that it stands up, it feels extremely sturdy, and the form factor is compact. I’m just wondering why no power button? Is it about trying to keep a certain price point? I like to have something I can switch on and off, and having to fish around for the power cable is weird.
