The 8TB d2 Professional USB 3.1 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie features a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port that’s compatible with Thunderbolt 3 devices. In case your system isn’t equipped with a Type-C port, it comes with a Type-C to Type-A adapter.
Inside is a Seagate BarraCuda Pro enterprise-class drive, which spins at 7200 rpm and offers data transfer rates of up to 260 MB/s. The drive is pre-formatted as exFAT, which allows for compatibility with both macOS and Windows systems. If you’re using the drive with only one operating system, you optimize the drive’s performance by reformatting it as NFTS for Windows or HFS+/APFS for macOS.
In addition to its warranty, this drive includes a five-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan as well as a one-month membership to Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan.

Great HDD Driver, but it’s a bit slower than the LaCie Porshe Design..

Excellent hard drive to go with your Mac computer!

I chose this drive because although a previous LaCie (Seagate) failed me, the technicians sent me a new disk with my data restored. You don’t need to know how and why the backup of the drive also failed, but the result was that I needed and received my data back via the recovery services that come with these drives. And they are easy and fast and reliable, in short, you get what you are shopping for. I have not figured out how to turn off the disco-dancing led light show that plays when the drive is in use, but I put tape over it. It still wastes my electric power, but it is less distracting covered up.

I jut got this affordable but amazing external hard drive, paired it with my MacBook Pro (2017), and it’s really fast as they advertise it. Just did Blackmagic speed test and its 210/220 mbp/s. Before this one, I got Glyph 5tb Blackbox Pro (6months ago), which served me very well for one project, very stable, but with the speed of 180 mbp/s. So my opinion is, that if you want the fastest external hard drive in this price range, for your MacBook Pro (or any usb-c device), with super fancy and minimal black design, this is definitely an external hard drive to buy. Btw its looks amazing, and I don’t work for Lacie, I am a video editor :).

Generally works as expected. Feels fast for a platter-based drive. The enclosure looks terrific and has a great tactile feel. I’m grateful for the included cables. Cons: This is only detected as a 5Gbps, not 10Gbps on my ’20 M1 Mini. Detected at full speed on my ’19 16 Macbook Pro. Apparently this is a M1 issue with some devices. Oh well, it doesn’t affect the speed of the platter-based drive on the M1. The only other minor con with this is that it never really goes into standby or ‘parks’ like my other external HDD does -this is always spinning. I believe this is a result of the enterprise drive contained within. Luckily the enclosure does a good job of insulating the noise.

I have many LaCie hard drives. I like the older ones better because they have an on-off switch in the back. Not having the switch complicates juggling a number of hard drives.

junk hard drive, I only use it 1 every couple week and out of no where it crashed so now Im screwed, I lost all my footage I would not recommend this, instead but a Samsung portable ssd t5

Not SSD, but a fast 14 TB drive. My 12 TB G-Raid could no longer be read by my new M1 MacBook, but I was able to save a lot of data to the LaCie, which holds more. So far, it is working very well. Plus it talking up very little space. Wish there was an on/off button, but it knows when it’s connected. Pleased so far. It will plug into the Mac without an adaptor. Not heavy but seems solid. Quiet. Would be easy to take on jobs if needed. I’d get a case were I to travel with it.

Plugged it into my iMac and it just worked instantly. I wish that everything was that easy.

I was impressed with the construction materials – a metal housing, not flimsy plastic. Setup and operation was seamless, and the data transfer rate was about 50% faster than my previous external HD. Ask me in 5 or 6 years about longevity.

Just got this yesterday, so trying to copy files to it to consolidate my files. Works great until it gets to a large file, like a folder with 20GB. Stops working and I have to reboot the computer, MacBook Air. Anyone have a solution?

Love this drive… i own 6 of them in 4-10gb configurations. from 4 to 6gb this drive works great. Im editing 4k video in Davinci Resolve. With the larger storage 8-10gb the drive is slow and loud. Video and Canon R5 Raw photo editing is slow with the larger storage drives. I’ll purchase 6gb and less for my needs. Hope this review helps.

I’ve been using LaCie hard drives for many years. I can have five or six hard drive plugged into my Mac Pro at any time. I don’t keep them all running so I like to turn them off and only turn them on when I need them, but with the newer models there is no-off switch.

I had a ton of data to transfer to this drive and it went with ease. I’ve very happy with this product so far.

The drive is sort of slow and very noisy. It’s ‘working’ sound resembles something between a rattling and a gurgling – which is more distracting @ some times than others.

It works unobtrusively and silently backing up. This is my third La Cie back up. The other two failed but I recognize that all hard drives fail.

So far so good, got 3 of them including a 10 tb, also they look awesome. Huge thx to B&H for having everything in stock.

I tried all brands and no one beats this LaCie. Faster, silent and perfect to storage all files with safety

I had bought this product after my previous hard drive had bitten the dust. This is a great hard dive that’s very reliable, fast, and easy to set up and use. The build quality of this hard drive really puts an emphasis on “hard” made nearly entirely out of aluminum. Lacie didn’t take any short cuts when designing this product. The one suggestion I would make is to dim the indicator light, as my office is part of my bedroom and when I forget to eject the hard drive the light is relentless in lighting up my room.
