Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

I got this unit for archiving files, not for use as an active drive. I would use a faster one for that and use an SSD to carry around with photo gear. But this one works fine for my purposes. It took backing up photos, videos, music and documents very well. A good deal at the price I paid.

I’ve always used WD external hard drives, but heard good things about LaCie so I thought I’d give it a try. The cable for the LaCie has never had a tight fit. I barely bump it and it disconnects, which is a huge pain when transferring large files. I’ve only used this about 4 months and am extremely cautious when transferring it. I’m disappointed and am planning on replacing it with a WD as soon as I finish typing this review.

I use this to store DSLR film files and other related media – it’s fast and when I am on set I am not worried about it getting knocked around as much because of the protective rubber casing. The orange color is great for me because it makes it easy to find amongst all my other gear. I hope they make different colors of the casing so I can get them for different projects!

The Rugged Mini is a great little unit with a lot of disk space and a nice rugged design, but the icing on the cake is the 10 GB of Wuala online storage that comes with it. Unlike some other online services, apparently nobody can decrypt my files except me (files are stored encrypted with a key only I have), which gives me peace of mind.
