Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

Very easy to set up. Rugged case is very nice. I bit more expensive but in my opinion worth it as I stash it in backpacks and travel with it. No power needed so it is fairly compact and light to carry.

my travel schedule means my data comes with me. I got tired of losing portable drives that were not RUGGED. I’m not certain if this is ‘steady state’ under the hood, but I do know that these LACIE devices are GREAT! I’ve purchased earlier versions of this device for work, then got some for home. I know it sounds odd, but my family now has a little orange device near each computer.

I set this up as a back up time machine drive with my Macbook Pro. On the initial back up, it copied 1.75TB (1,750GB) in 30 hours from another external hard drive………..So roughly about 58GB per hour. From here on out each back up will just be a few minutes, if that. During the initial 30 hour back up, the drive did not get hot what so ever, and was completely silent. So far so good.

This is light, strongly made. I will use it when travelling to backup the photos I take. The only critisism I have is the 1TB rated unit has storage for under 800Gb.

On arrival, I plugged in to a USB port. My PC recognized it right away. I transferred about 50 gb worth of videos. A short time later, I went to add some more and couldn’t access the drive. The PC saw it, but attempts to open it to view files resulted in an endless time-out and no access. I tried to reach out to LaCie support. They promised a 24 hour window to respond. After three days (and my having resolved it myself), they sent me a link to their troubleshooting page (which I had already tried). I ended up reformatting the drive and it appears to be working fine now (knock wood). They lose a star for sub-standard support.

I was looking for a reliable portable drive and chose Rugged-Mini. The device is very sturdy. Data encryption and password protection offer extra security. Setup is easy. The drive works well with large files and demanding tasks. Disk capacity is enough for storing all my photos and videos. An excellent device, highly recommended!

Good HDD however I try to backup a lot of pictures I have in an old Windows XP laptop and simply was not recongnized by the XP, when another external Seagate HDD drive I own did it flawlessly. Thinking is a rugged drive I like this drives last long and for backup almost everything valuable, including old important files/pictures.
