Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

I use this hard drive as my on location drive during photo shoots. It’s fast, reliable and lightweight. I’ve dropped it and banged it around a number of times with no problems. It keeps on kicking. The only downfall is that it generates a lot of heat. Which is only a problem when I’m on my laptop and it’s resting in my lap.

It’s a solid product, however the Micro B USB plug does not stay securely within the hard drive. The slightest movements seem to cause it to loosen and then it pops out unexpectedly, so if you use yours with a laptop on the go like I do, keep this in mind. I’ve already had to restore my files once due to this happening in the middle of work and causing the drive to become corrupted and unmountable. I thought perhaps the orange rubber was to blame, but removing it revealed that they accounted for it to be there. At this point I’m considering super-gluing the cable in place permanently. Otherwise, it’s a very solid and rugged hard drive, with no other issues to report.

I bought 2 of these and use both to back up my PC. I wanted something dependable and the vast majority of reviews gave it 5 stars. Too soon to determine durabiltiy. Kudos to B&H. They got it to me on a timely matter and had the best price to boot. However, for some reason, the receipt they sent me had an order date 3 months before I bought it. What’s with that? That makes my warantee 3 months shorter. So, not happy about that.

The read/write speed is way too slow to pull the data. We bought two and they’re useless. Had to rush out and get an SSD drive – lost a half day of editing – and SSDs are a lot more expensive. But the difference was instantaneous. Wonder if I can send these back?
