Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

I USE IT FOR BACK UP AND TRANSPORTING MY FILES TO AND FROM THE OFFICE. IT’S FAST, RUGGED AND RELIABLE. AND IT LOOKS COOL TOO. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THE CONNECTION ON THE BACK OF THE DRIVE. IT’S VERY THIN AND CAN BE A BIT DIFFICULT TO CONNECT.

As the lead IT manager for a Mid-size advertising agency in Soho, I have many of our creatives requesting hard drives to offload digital photos/raw video while on the shoot. The Lacie Rugged allows us to transport data with less worry of damaging the harddrive and also is powered through the Firewire cord so there is one less cord to have to deal with, and in our case when travelling to other countries from time to time frees us the worry of another power cord. The data rate is also extremely fast which keeps the impatient ones from waiting too long for the latest batch of images for our advertising needs. I highly recommend these drives.

Very useful and apparently durable external hard drive. Had a problem with the LaCie partitioning/drive set-up software. (Backup program indicated an error). This was resolved by erasing the drive and reformatting via Mac’s disk utility. Otherwise, seems to work great for my purpose – back up.

Anyone who uses external hard drives for video work knows that brands come in and out of favor due to manufacturing changes. For the most part, LaCie has treated me very well (knock on wood) and so I tend to come back to them for their reliable rugged drives. I do location work and it’s nice to have a portable for back up as well as a small (in size) drive for mailing to clients across the states. On the why tip, B&H is THE source. They’ve never messed up a delivery or order for me. I can only assume their customer service is top-notch, as I’ve yet to ever need them. Several people have indicated that the included cable is one-of-a-kind and unique to LaCie. This is not the case. It is a standard USB 3.0 micro b connector. You can purchase one at many retailers, including here at B&H, for under $10.
