Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

Simple back up drive loaded easily and works fine. Fast enough for backups. Not sure if the orange padding makes it more durable, but should help with a drop.

I purchased this hard drive to edit a project on Final Cut Pro. Seems to work great keeps up with playback and rendering decently. I sometimes switch back and forth from my desktop to my laptop. When I use this hard drive on the laptop I have to plug in a usb power cord to add power to my Lacie usb 3.0 expresscard34 so that it will give enough bus power to the hard drive. That’s probably the only inconvenience I notice.

I also added an automatic backup program to keep the files update on my LaCie drive. Couldn’t be simpler.

The Rugged Mini is a great little unit with a lot of disk space and a nice rugged design, but the icing on the cake is the 10 GB of Wuala online storage that comes with it. Unlike some other online services, apparently nobody can decrypt my files except me (files are stored encrypted with a key only I have), which gives me peace of mind.

The test of any drive is longevity so can’t relate any info there as I have just bought this so only 4 stars so far. LaCie rugged drives have proven to be pretty reliable. I was a bit skeptical about the mini usb port connector but works fine with my multiple macs- even my old powerbook had no trouble mounting this little beast. Will be using strictly for massive media file backup. Am not using the included software beyond the setup app which seems to play well with macs. So far so good.

Drive is tough and works well but the encryption part is not user friendly cannot set a password on it yet …..paid more only for that purpose …

This is my fifth LaCie Rugged. I’m a professional architectural photographer and I use these drives on the road for file storage. I store finished projects on them as well and back up to additional hard drives at my office. I switched to the LaCie Rugged 5 years ago and fill about one 4TB drive each year. I’ve never had a failure or problem of any sort averaging about 60k miles of travel each year.

I got this hard drive to bring along while I travel. It is a nice compact and rugged drive, perfect for traveling. I plan on backing up my important files before I leave home and take the LaCie with me. Using Windows File Explored, it is easy to place and retrieve files on the LaCie.
