Designed for students, travelers, photographers, and videographers, the 5TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from LaCie features shock, drop, and pressure resistance, as well as a rubber sleeve for added protection. It can also withstand up to one ton of crush resistance, including being driven over by a car. Aside from its tough exterior, the Rugged Mini provides a storage capacity of 5TB and data transfers of up to 130 MB/s. It connects to your host Windows or Mac system using its USB 3.0 interface and includes both USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables.

I have had very good luck with LaCie portable drives in the past. I needed another back up drive so I bought this model. I now have three generations of LaCie portable drives. The oldest (6 years) is the fastest. The next oldest is a little slower. I just did a full backup to the new drive. It is slower than the other two. I knew it wasn’t a fast drive when I bought it. The price is right and it works. So I’m satisfied. I hope it has a long life like the old ones did.

I’m a new convert to USB 3.0, and I don’t know how I managed before. Transfers are very fast, and backups take a fraction of the time they used to take with my old USB 2.0 drive. Apart from the speeds, this drive does exactly what it’s supposed to do and provides a lot of space to backup all of my files. It’s quiet and easy to use, too.

It is to soon to right a complete review of this product, because with external hard drives, the issue is security and longevity. Nonetheless, my experience so far has been good. The USB3 has provided fast communication with my desktop (mac pro), including FinalcutPro 7. The drive was purchased as the exclusive drive for a documentary film project I have begun. It’s small size make it easy to travel along with my macbook pro, for when I am out of the country workng on my project.Time will tell in terms of other qualities or possible negative issues (which I hope I have no reason to write about).
