First I want to identify this product as the LEM 8.5 inch Big Bite Meat Slicer Model # 8511 so there is no confusion. I received it via “drop ship” from LEM very quickly and it was packed well and received undamaged. Upon inspection I found that two nuts and washers needed to attach the clear plastic safety guard were missing. A call to LEM customer service cured that problem and four days later I was able to attach the safety guard. The unit was attractive and well made. It is a heavy unit and there are no designated lifting areas to make it safer and easier. There is a integral blade sharpening attachment but I am very worried that the design and the fact that the sharpening stones are coarse and would damage rather than sharpen the blades. I have made the decision to hand hone the blade after removing it from the slicer. The blade is 8.5 inches in diameter and is very sharp. The food carrier unit is well made it slides very easily back and forth making slicing easy but it is limited to no more than 6 inches of slicing width and 4 inches of room to place the item to the sliced (depth) if the food holder is employed. The approximate maximum height of items to be sliced is 6 inches. I was somewhat disappointed by this “handicapped” ability to slice larger cuts of meat. I wanted to slice a rather small piece of smoked ham but found that it was too wide to fit in the slicer. I had to cut off about 1 inch on either side of the ham to get it to fit. Once I did get it to fit I found that slicing was very easy, the slices were very uniform and could be cut very thin for sandwiches. The blade is very sharp and this slicer didn’t slow down one bit during slicing. In addition this slicer is very quiet and is easy to clean with very little disassembly required. I highly recommend that you get a cut-resistant glove before trying to clean or disassemble or even to pick up and move this slicer. It weighs about 30 pounds and there are a couple places where you could accidently get cut if you aren’t very careful. I did like the long power cord and the easy and accurate slicing gauge which appears to be metric. Slicing thickness is from about .5 millimeters up to about 10 millimeters or .40 inches. Overall I am mostly happy with this slicer but I am disappointed with its “handicapped” slicing capability. I recommend it only if you are willing to accept that drawback. This unit is made in China and imported by LEM. It’s a pretty good slicer.
