The ThinkPad UltraSlim USB DVD Burner from Lenovo is a small form factor external portable DVD and CD recordable drive that can be attached to a notebook with a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. It conforms with standard specifications for the following types of media CD-R, CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-R (dual-layer recording), DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R(dual-layer recording), and DVD+RW. It offers a 0.75MB memory buffer underrun protection for reliable CD and DVD media recording. The burner includes PowerDVD for capturing, editing, and creating your own videos and PowerDVD software for playback DVD videos.

It took FOUR attempts to get the ThinkPad UltraSlim DVD Burner to completely and properly install on my ThinkPad laptop. Once installed, it seems to work well reading, saving and downloading files.

This is one of the most convent external DVD drives to transport. If you want to use a smaller bag when traveling, then this is the drive to choose. It does not require an external power adapter which is one less thing to remember. If you are connecting the drive to USB 3 it only requires the use of 1 port. However USB 2 and below require 2 ports close together on a Y cable to provide enough power. The downside to that is that most thin format laptops don’t have 2 USB ports side by side.

Bought a new Thinkpad T560 which, due to its slimline silhouette, did not have a CD/DVD drive. Since many of my work programs are still delivered via CD, I needed that capacity. The ThinkPad UltraSlim DVD burner turned out to be an excellent choice: it is well designed with the USB connector cable fitting into a slot in the back of the unit so there are no dangling cables. It is a compact size and is fast. The only problem I had was when I pulled the protective coating off of the original unit, it pulled some of the finish off of the exterior. Lenovo was very quick to replace the unit – 3 business days. This is a quality producr.

This ThinkPad UltraSlim USB DVD Burner is sturdier (better build) than other name brand purchased a week earlier. The included software is also very helpful. The other name brand offered nothing. And it works well with my new Lenovo P17.

(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) One thing that isn’t mentioned in the product description/write-up is that the DVD player comes with a “single to dual” USB 2 connector. The documentation PDF mentions that the DVD player needs more power than can be provided by the single USB 3 connector plugged into a USB 2 port. This fact should be mentioned in the product description. The player seems to work fine using a single USB 3 connection plugged into a USB 3 port.

Easy to install and works perfectly. I wish it could have been contained in the laptop, but that’s what makes the x1 carbon so slim and extremely light. It’s just a little annoying if you need to move the laptop around and have this drive dangling off. But it’s truly a minor inconvenience.
