Only 4 stars because the built in USB hub isnt very usable. It kills power and connectivity to attached USB devices when the monitor is turned off. As a result, turning off the monitor means abruptly ejecting attached disk drives even if your computer remains powered up. A $20 USB hub fixes this issue but is another piece of clutter on the desk.

Using a 2019 macbook pro, this monitor crashes. It’ll shut itself down for a few seconds and restore itself. It also doesn’t have enough power to charge a 2019 macbook pro. I’ve noticed my battery life go down during high intensity tasks. It’s a buggy piece of disappointing garbage. Also, the viewing angle is GARBAGE. load a dark grey strip across the page. It will completely change color at the sides. I’ve mistakenly thought icons were disabled because they appear blurred out at the edge of the monitor. I bought this in the wake of COVID-19 because my work laptop is an older macbook which doesn’t support USB-C and with COVID-19, B&H and all other retailers were out of stock of most good monitors….so this was one of the remaining monitors. It’s expensive and barely resembles a functioning monitor, but I cannot really return it because I need a monitor and there’s few other alternatives. I use it primarily for programming. It’s sharp-enough for text…maybe acceptable for a $300 monitor at this size, but this is not a $700+ monitor, in terms of quality. I have 2 other USB-C/thunderbolt3 monitors and they’re fine. I have the 5k 27 and there are no viewing angle issues. The color is perfect and consistent across the entire screen (it just doesn’t work with my work laptop). Both of my other monitors charge the laptop reliably and never have any hiccups or crashes. They just work. The terrible viewing angle and crashing makes this seem like an off-brand bargain monitor, but it’s very much priced like a premium professional monitor. It is inadequate for photo editing. It is inadequate for USB-C usage, so it can’t be a single cable solution. It costs over 2x more than it should. If I had any other alternative, I’d send it back, but having something I can do work on is better than nothing, so I am stuck with this terrible, terrible purchase.

The picture is TERRIBLE. You can’t use it for photo editing. For example, Lightroom has a horizontal grey bar in the UI. It renders at a different color and looks like a gradient…because the tone is so uneven, so the image looks different depending on where it is on the screen. Move it from the center to the side and the color changes. Beyond that, the backlight suddenly failed. I can hear audio from multiple different sources, but no video or on screen menu. Also LG’s warranty service is designed to be terrible. It’s difficult to find the service link and even more difficult to get a response.
