Description
The silver GP65NS60 Portable USB External DVD Burner and Drive from LG allows you to read and write on DVDs and CDs with your computer. This drive connects to your Windows or Mac computer via USB. It features 8x DVD and 24x CD read and write speeds. To offer a better movie experience while watching a DVD, this drive provides Silent Play technology, which automatically adjusts the read speed to reduce its noise level. In addition, this drive supports TV connectivity with optional hardware. It also has Jamless Play so you can watch videos continuously by skipping over erroneous data or damaged areas of the disc that may stop your video. Furthermore, this drive can use M-Discs (DVD+R SL only), which provides data protection by using a patented rock-like recording surface instead of organic dye to etch your data onto a disc. Along with the drive are software programs that include Power2Go, PowerBackup, YouCam, LabelPrint, and Norton Internet Security (60 days).

I bought this writer a few years ago. Used it a couple of times to listen to music from my CDs. Never burned with it. It was on the shelf until today, I tried to listen to one of the CDs and it doesn’t work at all. I really surprised. Using for years different electronic products by LG and trusting the quality, I really surprised.

Specifications say this drive requires Windows or Mac OS X, but I find it is compatible with Linux (Linux Mint 20.2). It will play audio CDs (with Rhythmbox), movie DVDs (with Celluloid), and burn CD-R and DVD-R (with kb3). But be careful which software you use for burning: brasero was unacceptably slow. Like many DVD drives today, the disk drawer does not open fully enough to completely uncover the disk. The box I received says made in Malaysia. I tested this LG external DVD in three ways 1) watching a full length movie 2) burning a disc 3) opening a DVD with TIFF files. I bought this external drive because my 6 year old desktop internal DVD was slowing down and sometimes would not burn DVDs. Not sure the upgrade to LG made a lot of difference. It took 7 minutes to burn a 2.5GB dvd. It took 5 minutes to try to read the DVD with TIFF files but I finally gave up waiting. As for the movie, no issues. I expect if I’d paid more I would have gotten a more robust DVD with faster read/write speeds but this will do in a pinch.

I needed an external burner for my new computer and so this one was a great price. I made the mistake of first trying to run it through an USB expander hub from Triplett and I kept getting write errors. I then ran it directly into a chassis mounted USB slot and all was well. I moved my keyboard and mouse to the Triplett usb expander box and all important stuff is now direct.

This is less of a review, and more of a guide. If you’re not able to burn a disc on Windows 10 ensure that you’re connecting to a USB 2.0 (not 3.0) port on your computer. It would seem the device doesn’t support USB 3.0 for writing purposes (reads are fine though).

I am sure this works fine. I returned it when I found out that my 2 in 1 with windows 10 would not play DVDs. Win 10 does not have a native DVD component. (AAARGH) Probably need an AP. It can be used for storage. p.s. I am not much of a win 10 user. My software and I are grounded in win 7.
