Cast iron Dutch ovens distribute evenly and hold their heat longer the other pans. Great for cooking things like Jambalaya which is cooked in layers and requires accurate heat for each step. The handles make it convenient for picking up and handling. The lid fits the 12 inch Lodge skillet as well which I use when I am frying chicken. This would be good to purchase with the Lodge 12 inch skillet.

Seems very strong. It came already preseasoned. I have already used it, and it cooks well.

I already had a few Lodge cast iron pans I’ve been using for several years, and this dutch oven has the same awesome quality that they do. It comes pre-seasoned, so there’s no “break-in” time waiting for the nonstick coating to develop. The cast iron holds heat better than any other kind of cookware, and is probably the most versatile type too as far as compatible heat sources go. You can throw this in the oven, on the stove, on the grill, or even on a campfire. I remember some pretty awesome cobblers from my childhood made in a dutch oven over a campfire, so I’m going to have to see if I can re-create the awesomeness. One thing to take note of is that this lid doesn’t have a raised rim around the top, so if you heap coals on top of it, you’ll have to be very careful not to get any ashes in your food when removing the lid. On the inside of the lid, there are a ton of “stalactites” which are actually self-basting tips that drip condensed moisture back onto the food evenly and keep it from drying out.
