The pot was easy to use. She put it on an open fire outside and boiled water in it to use out doors. and she likes it very much. She does a lot of cooking in the cast iron pots and skelets. on an open fire. I am sorry but I don’t have A picture of it in action. OK

The wife chose a seriously awesome tasting chicken stew for the first meal cooked in our new 5Qt. Cast Iron Dutch oven. She said it felt heavier than her 7Qt. enamel Dutch oven, but we weighed them both and found (of course) that the 5Qt was lighter. Why the difference in perceived weight? The enamel pot can only be lifted by the two handles on either side, two hands at a time. This 5Qt has the bail handle, so you usually lift it with one hand. Just something to keep in mind when maneuvering it, full of sizzling stew out of a hot oven. The first recipe turned out to have a fair bit of acid in the ingredients (tomato, white wine), so there was a bit of rust on the lid (see picture). Will need to work on seasoning the pot (and lid!) a bit more, methinks. The scrubber we’ve found that works best is a stainless steel “chain mail” mesh. Found ours online at the major-river-name-inspired website.

I gave this as a gift to my friend. He has recently starting taking his family camping and needless to say, he was a happy camper to get this beautiful pot. I have been a fan of Lodge cast iron cooking for all of my life. I grew up with my grandmother & mother using it & I continue that tradition.

Have been in the market for a dutch oven for a while now. Finally saw the Lodge and couldn’t pass it up. Looking at the 5 qt. size the size is very deceiving but don’t let it fool you this little baby holds a whole lot. Just like it’s skillet counterpart the cast iron holds the heat and when fully heated sears meats to hold in the juices and just throw in the rest of your ingredients and either finish cooking on the stove top or slide it right in the oven. For anyone who has never has cast iron cookware before just a warning it will take some getting use to handling due to the weight of it, but what do you expect it’s cast iron. But with the proper care, (No soap or steel wool), this will last you a lifetime.

This is the first cast iron cookware you will bring on camping and outdoor gatherings. Hung over a camp fire or buried under hot embers this is ” the” all purpose cooking pot which will endure year after year. Made of thick heavy forged cast iron but more importantly made in the good old United States so you know it will last unlike all the imported offshore junk sold everywhere.

I had been thinking about purchasing a cast iron skillet for some time, as I can remember my mother using one when I was growing up.I knew of the Lodge brand of cast iron cookware and liked the idea of supporting a family-owned, made-in-the-USA company.I decided to purchase the Dutch oven since I was in need of a larger sized pot.So far I’ve only used it a couple times on the stovetop, but have been very satisfied. Keeps food hot long and clean up is easy.I will have to get used to the weight of the pot and making sure I have a pot holder handy for picking up the lid, but no problem. I was surprised that the bail handle on the pot didn’t get too hot.I’m excited about cooking other things and trying it in the oven. Maybe this was the boost I needed to start cooking more! It makes me think of Mom & Grandma.Great product so far!

I am going to get lots of mileage from this Dutch oven! I made a big batch of soup to take to a pot luck. After thirty minutes in the car, the soup was still hot! The handle lays flat or can be positioned a little above the lid and it stays pretty cool, which surprised me. A breeze to wash up, nothing sticks. This did come pre-seasoned, which is a real plus. The surface is textured, my Mom’s cast iron has smooth surfaces and I always had burned or caked on food that would be a bear to clean up…but that was the 50’s, this is now and I couldn’t be happier with this choice.I’m looking forward to taking this camping this summer! Hang from a tripod over hot coals and we’ll be a feasting!Another homerun Home Depot, thanks!
