I bought the hood knowing there was some options for the mismatched size of the hood and standard 2-1/2″ vacuum hoses. I found what I think is a better means to adapt the two – it looks like a factory connection and does not require taping, clamping, etc. The adapter is a rubber cap for sewer pipe, found in the plumbing department (made by ‘PlumbQwik’ Part No. PQC-102). Cost was $3.30. If you cut out a hole in the closed end to form a bushing, it fills the gap between the dust collector and the hose exactly. It allows for an air tight connection, flexibility in the fitting and you can barely even see it. See the photos for clarity. This really should be provided by Makita with the duct.

It is almost impossible to attach the vacuum to this product . Makita needs to redesign or make an additional attachment available.

The attachment goes on very easy, but its been difficult to attach a hose to it. It doe get jammed if I don’t keep an eye on it, which is kind of a bummer. I didn’t expect it to be as nice as the Planer itself so I wasn’t too let down, but I did think it would work a little better than it does. I would still recommend it though as without one the mess is massive.

Goes on and off quickly and easily. Works very well.

Does what it is supposed to do. I wish there were more standardized fittings so I could easily connect to my shop vac. I had to sand the ID and OD of a plastic pipe coupler to mate the shop vac.

Well, it directs the dust to the side as it should and I’m glad I got it. The only puzzling thing this the port size. It doesn’t match any conventional dust removal system. Almost like Makita hired an engineer who’s never done woodworking AND EVERYONE in the approval process has never done woodworking. So, as you can see in the photo, I found a dyer duct and used screw clamps. For the other end, I had an extra length of the Rigid shop vac connector tubes. I cut the end off, wrapped a shop towel around it and clamped it. So it works now. Fortunately I was able to find a solution quickly, but annoyed I had to spend extra money unnecessarily.

The dust collector hood should come with the planer because no one will run the planer without the hood. However, the quality of the hood is excellent to perfectly match the planer.

The collector fit well and works as expected. You have to be clever in making a connection to a 4″ dust collector. I used a 6″ section of thin-wall smooth irrigation pipe (which fits snug on the hose connector) to a 4″ to 3″ reducer (which fits snug to the planner hood). I filled the small gap with felt and sealed it with aluminum tape and screws. I added an s-hook to the end of the collector hose and used a bungee cord wrapped around the handles to the s-hook to take any weight off of the connection. Works like a charm and is easy to take on/off.
