I purchased one of these as a factory reconditioned product several years age from my local Hardware store for under $300.00. It looked like a brand new machine, and worked as a new machine as well. I too think the discharge hood should have either a 2 1/2″ or 4″ discharge, or at least have Makita make an adapter available. I found that if I give a slight lift to the piece being planed, it eliminates snipe. An excellent product and even at retail a very good buy

Once the product arrived (after finding it at my neighbors house Delivered by UPS ) I was happy to see no damage. Right out of the box it worked great! Very quiet ! I’ve only used it for softer wood ,pine ,larch . The snipe was very minimal (only on the in feed side) . I will try to adjust the in feed table to see if I can get rid of it completely. All in all, very happy with my purchase!

It does a good job overall, but on some of the boards I put through, I got significant snipe.

I bought this machine about one month ago. Used few times and very happy with an outcome. The plane produces very smooth surface with a minimal or none snipe.

only used it once, haven’t had it that long, It worked great! my husband said it is very nice!

Bought it to plane some 2X6 white oak, it worked flawlessly! Noise level is acceptable(for a planer). Quality build and performance is excellent. Purchased it based on its weight (easily portable) and the noise level but most importantly…its performance! Excellent!

After a month of limited use, I like the planer. So far, it seems to do everything Makita says it will. The dust hood, an extra at about twenty bucks uses a three inch outlet. I found a metal clothes dryer hose at Lowes, which works just fine. But, you shouldn’t have to resort to this. Makita should have either supplied the dust hood with the planer or at least supplied one that accepts standard dust collection accessories.

Cut quality is good, easy to use, still have lots of snipe.

After only the initial setup I’m pleased with the Makita planer. If it’s as good as my other Makita equipment, e.g. the Mac700 compressor, I know I’ll like it. Did experience a small amount of snipe on the first pieces run through it, but despite the marketing hype, that’s to be expected. Finish is glasslike as other reviewers have noted.Workmanship on this planer appears excellent; the design well thought out. The little plastic gizmos with magnets which are supplied for setting the knives appear unimpressive; however, I really won’t be in a position to comment on their functionality till it’s time to change knives.I bought the accessory dust hood. (The fact that this accessory isn’t included on a top priced planer is the reason for the four-star value rating!) Having read of the difficulty other purchasers have had in connecting the hood, I was prepared to cobble something together. First, though, and with the dust hood in hand, I went prospecting at Home Depot for a solution and found one first thing. It’s a 3″ to 4″ thin wall PVC drain pipe reducer/increaser The smaller end fits snugly over the blue plastic Makita hood, while the 4″ end neatly accommodates a 4″ ABS plastic dust collection “quick connect” or a 4″ hose with clamp. For those who might want to look for the adapter, it’s “Model IRB 43”, SKU 079916700113. It’s with the other drain pipe components rather than with the plumbing pipe.I intend to construct a storage cabinet onto which this planer will be mounted. It will be used interchangeably with my 15 year old DeWalt DW735. My hope is to reserve the planer with the better set of knives from time to time for fine finishing work while using the other one for rough-sawn material. Whether I’ll save enough to justify two machines remains to be seen.

I would rate this product higher but I have not used it enough to give it that rating. Other than a few test boards I have planed a couple pieces of redwood and an oak board to make a live edge wall mounted clothes hanger for the bedroom. All results great so far.

I needed a planer to take the cup out of 1x8s I was using for baseboards. I found the Makita online at Home Depot. Very pleased with the planer. Good quality, little or no snipe, and a smooth finish. The only drawback is the little plastic key that enables the switch. It can fall out and I finally tied a string through a small hole in the key and attached the other end to one of the handles on top of the planer. That’s my only complaint thus far and it’s minor.

This is the first planer I’ve owned and the second I’ve used. I truly love it. Low noise. Very clean finished surface. I’ve put only about 150 board feet through it. I only remove 1/32 to 1/16th inch at a time. Slight snipe. I plan to build a work station with infeed / outfeed tables for long boards, but the built in ones handle material at least 18in and maybe longer. It weighs just over 60 lbs which is fine for me.

This is the first surface planer I have owned and I love it!! Perfect right out of the box. Easy to use and set up was no problem. cutter blade change is a simple with on board case and magnets supplied. Makita was the right choice

The best portable planer out there! Quiet for a portable and cuts smooth. Spend the extra on this one and you wont be sorry.

Excellent at resurfacing after using bigger planers and getting lumber to specific dimensions. It produces a mirror finish as long as no knots pass through it. Really like the increment of 1/2 turn = 1 mm. Very easy to use. 3 in black flexible central vac hose fits optional dust collector exactly. Don’t even need clamps. For my needs at least, A+ on this one.

Works like a champ. I have been planning very old redwood from an old fence. Made a huge pile of shavings, but the planner does a clean job. Easy to store as well with integrated handles on top and food up table. I have yet to be disappointed with Makita products.

The Makita 2012NB was easy to set up and the pre-calibration was on the mark. Out of the box I planed 100 linear board feet of hardwood to the thickness I needed without a hitch. I also purchased the dust collector hood which kept the work are almost free of chips and dust. I think the biggest drawback are the fold-out tables. They are pretty flimsy compared to the Dewalt fold-out tables.

The planer is great. Solid, accurate and precise. WARNING! It is not well packaged. Mine was badly damaged in shipping. Good thing Gerard at HD in Santee CA resolved the problem with excellent customer service.

This is by far the nicest planer I’ve ever had!! It’s relatively light weight, small, surprisingly quiet, and easily handles a full 12 inch wide board up to 6 inches thick. I have not run any hardwoods through it yet, but based on how nicely it finished fir, pine, redwood, and cedar, I suspect it will have no trouble with harder materials. If you don’t have a chip removal system I recommend either using it outside or hooking a large shop vac to it, but be carefull, the vac fills up quickly.
