Sure, I read all of the reviews on this very planer, but I didn’t know it would work as great as it did. I only did about 20 lnr. ft, but man the finish was un real! I went straight to building my medicine cab without sanding! I think i’m going to change out the in and out feed tables for ones little longer and put a 1/8 inch rise on them too to totally eliminate snipe (even though there was NO snipe at all).

I have never owned a planer. So, this is my first and I bought it because of the good reviews and the lack of snipe that the reviews mentioned. I have found it to work as represented. Very little if any snipe and it did a great job on my 2x4s, Maple and Walnut. I do have one major complaint. The instructions are terrible. If you know what you are doing I suppose you do not need them. But I need them. I posted a question on this site and Makita told me to call them. I called them and they told me they could not help me unless they met with me in person. I live in CA and they are in GA. I asked for instructional videos and Makita has none. If there was a way to give me a better idea how to use this and plane wood to an even thickness my rating would go up. But, Makita’s lack of instruction and terrible manual (for me) really take away from an otherwise very good product.

Bought this planer after waiting for it to go on sale as it was the quietest unit on the market according to the woodworking blogs. I have a basement workshop and did not want to make enemies of my wife wife or the neighbours. Found it to leave a good finish on the softwood I usually use but, as is the case with most machines, does leave some snipe which I am working at eliminating. As a woodworking hobbyist, this is a perfect unit for me. And yes, I am pleased with how “quiet” it is.

This planer is quieter than my previous planer (Rigid) and is built so that you can clean and lube all of the critical parts. Like any other cutting tool it works well with sharp blades. It doesn’t come with a dust collection shroud so I made one…no big deal. Simple engineering and robust design.

I make custom picture frames from ugly oak pallet planks. This planer makes the transformation from ugly to beautiful in seconds. I wish that every power-tool in my garage was as elegant in form and function.

This planer works very nicely. After planing my first piece, I thought it was one of the best tools I own. I won’t have a great need to plane material, but in a pinch it gives you much flexibility.

it was easy to set up except for the dust chute out of box it was excelent

I like the speed and ease of set up and quality of work this planer turns out.

So far so good. The machine was shipped very quickly and arrived in excellent condition. I do NOT have a lot of experience with planers (so take my comments with the appropriate grain of salt), but the machine works well, and does the job with virtually no pitting and a surprisingly acceptable noise level. There were several less expensive options, but I read several online reviews that recommended this model based on quality, noise and blade life, and I didn’t want to try to go cheap only to be disappointed. The attached fold out feed shelves (for the lack of an appropriate technical term) are a nice built in add on that would have been a separate purchase on other machines. They make the work much easier. I mounted the machine on a spare stand, and would recommend others consider doing the same or building a sturdy stand.

Planer arrived well packaged and pre assembled.Installed positional dust chute and started planning.Only used a couple of time so far but machine operates as expected and I would recommend it

Bought to make cabinet face frames for DIY kitchen cabinets having used it for a few weeks. While there is slight snipe that sands out with a block and fine paper it is negligible. We found that making the boards slightly longer and trimming the snipe is also easy to deal with. Removed the red depth indicator and made a clear acrylic part with a scribe mark to precisely see the depth dimension on the vertical scale. This is something Makita should do. The unit is heavy but that keeps it in place during operation. My neighbor said it didn’t seem loud to him. We are using the planer for poplar wood and the planer produces a glossy incredibly smooth finish. Depth stop is a nice feature. Would be nice if it had rubber feet and we set it up on top of our table saw. Maybe an optional stand? I don’t think one could ask for more from a DIY non commercial home wood shop planer. This is as good as it gets. Great quality and delivered almost next day as promised.

I have used this a few times to plane some small pieces and it works great. I bought the attachment to go to my shop vac and it does not fit my hose. I will have to go and get something to fix this. That has been the only problem so far.

Very nice planer. Easy to us; wood surface on output is very nice. Occasional snipe, but not bad. The only issue I’ve encountered is with hard woods such as teak and rosewood. The planer wouldn’t push the wood through. I had to pull it. But the results were pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. Nice planer overall.

To be honest I haven’t used it yet, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have something to complain about. Don’t think that because you bought this thing you are done buying stuff to support it. Namely the dust collection part. Beyond the part you need to hook your hose up to, which for some strange reason is only 3″, you will need a 3″ hose, a blast gate and if you are using a dust collector, a 3″ to 4″ adaptor. It would be so much easier if they put a 4″ opening on their dust collector adaptor.

So far I have only ran through 17 boards but they were rough sawn very hard ash and this planer worked perfect.Glad I spent a little more to get the Makita.

Not near as noisy, very little snipe, solidly built, easy to get to blades, very good feed, very little blow back of sawdust.

Purchased based on recommendation of others and personal experience with other Makita tools. Needless to say. I was not disappointed. This planer is easy to use and appears well made. On my first project, this planer performed flawlessly.

I was very surprised at how easy the blade change is with this model. The planer works very well and the easy blade change is an important plus. Love this machine.

Like all of these types of planers this one also has the 2″ snipe problems at each end. It is made less by running the next piece or test piece at the beginning and end. Otherwise it seems to do a pretty good job making what was a pretty messy surface into something that hardly needs sanding. I’m making 1/4″ thick strips (by 3/4″ tall) for wooden strip built canoes and I’ve run about 1000 feet so far and everything is fine. ——— I will note that the box it came in wasn’t meant for UPS shipping because mine had a dent/crack at the front base that could only happen with great force. If this was on a pallet like being shipped in quantity this would not have happened. I’m not about to return it as it’s now a busy part of my work flow and it’s working ok.
