I have extensively used the planar for over a month now and am pleased with its performance. One has to pay attention to the settings to ensure not too much wood is planed at one time. This will wear the rollers very quickly and these will be expensive to replace. (I also have a 16 inch – 220 volt Makita planer as well; it uses the same type of rollers, only larger.)

I did quite a bit of research on portable planers, and decided on this Makita 2012NB. It worked right out of the box. With the Dust Hood it was all I could want. As other reviewers have indicated, some adjustment has to be made to adapt the Dust Hood to a dust collector – but that was fairly minor. It is light enough to move easily, and store in my shop (where I don’t have the room for a full-sized unit). In the past 3 weeks I have used it to plane down some tough wood – copper beech – and it worked well. In its initial use, I am quite satisfied.

Typical great Makita quality. The tool looks basic, but does the job well. Ran a bunch of walnut through it, great results. Proper feed technique eliminates snipe. Even the tough grain didn’t have tearout as long as the depth of the pass was not overly aggressive. Use it right, great results.

Returned as it wasn’t large enough to accommodate the wood I needed to plane

i have ran so much red oak through this planer! it was ready as it came out of the box! I did a lot of research, talked to a lot of wood workers before I bought this planer! I am so glad i did great planer!

works well, produces nice finish and easy to use. Light weight and not too loud. Built very well.

I struggled with the decission, makita or its nearest competitor. Well once I tried out my new planer I knew I made the right choice. Spend the extra money, you won’t regret it. By the time you buy aftermarket cutters that are as hard as the makitas’ you are nearly at the price

I really vacillated over buying this planer or the Dewalt DW735. I had a Delta bench top planer that served me well over 20 years before giving up and having owned a number of Makita tools I have always been impressed with their quality. I have two disappointments. 1)Dust collection is poor. I have it setup to a professional dust collection system and other then the Makita 3″ ducting is exactly how my previous planer was setup. It throws a amazing amount of chips out of the infeed side. 2) Snipe, while all planers have some amount, this one has significantly more then my previous. The planer is quieter then my Delta, but not by a measurable amount.

It cut well and was a lot quieter then my old planer

The good:-Quite operation-Included folding in feed/out feed tables.-Very little snipe. 2-1/2 inches on the in feed, zero on the out feed for mine. Took about 15 seconds with 80 grit to clean it off.-Very smooth finish-Compact, and ready to go out of the box.The not so good:-The 3 inch, hard to find dust hood needs to be included. Finding adapters to fit it to your vacuum or D.E. will take some hunting.Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this machine and at about $60.00 less than the other top rated planer that begins with a ‘D’ and colored yellow, it’s also a better buy.-Aaron

This thing is one of the best tools ever made and being it’s makita makes it even better

Very quiet, leaves a very fine finish, easy to adjust, works great with optional dust hood, fold out tables are solid. really don’t know what else to say. i was hesitant to spend the money but this really is an amazingly well designed and built product. on small boards (under 2 feet length) i did get some sniping but very minimal and not difficult to fix with either some light sanding or, more appropriately, some more careful feeding technique.

The planer is being used to plane old cabin fir lumber to be used in the construction of doors.

The instructions leave a lot to be desired. There are no clear instructions on how to care for planner or change blades. I am a first time buyer of a planer and like the results i’ve been getting with this planer. I would recommend this tool but would like more detailed instructions…

Good sturdy machine. Leaves small light nips but not to bad. Nothing a light sanding wouldn’t take care of.

Planer looks nice, well built, but blades can’t cut hardwood, really disappointing

Much quieter than the Delta I had previously owned.

I love it but I have only used it a couple of time so far but works great

Simple to use and works perfectly right out of the box.
