This was my first bench top planer. Set up was very easy out of the box. No assembly, just had to remove protective packing material. I am very pleased with the smooth even finish of the boards. Planed faces and edges of boards very nicely. I recommend the Makita. You will not be disappointed.

Light weight is the name of the game. It has it’s limitations, and i dont know why a dust port isnt included, but the machine performs well enough that it’s not an issue. While it looks old school, the functions are simple to understand and use. The newest DeWalt will likely have more features, but they aren’t necessary, nor do they justify lugging around twice the weight.

Ready to use right out of the box. Recommend you purchase the vacuum attachment when you purchase the planer.

This product would get 5 stars if the manual that accompanied it was useful. I’ve had the product for 2 weeks and it has exceeded my expectations on the ease of use and high quality planning. I bought it because my research found it had the least amount of “snipe” at the ends of the board. I was not disappointed. No snipe at all. Planer does have somewhat flimsy and hard to adjust in feed and out feed tables but this did not take away from performance. Also I would like to complement Home Depot on prompt shipment to my home.and a very easy to use ordering web site.

First of all this is my first planer but I’ve been doing woodworking for 10+ years. It does a decent job, fairly smooth with only a little bit of snipe if done correctly. There isn’t much adjustability in the folding tables. They are fairly ridgid but not great. Speed isn’t adjustable but does a decent job. Would be nice to slow it down abit when cutting through hard maple. There is no dust port, needs to be bought separately but installs with no tools which is great. Port needs to be taken off when not connected to a vacuum. The machine itself is solid and well built. Overall good product.

When choosing to get a planer, looked at a slightly cheaper brand and decided to go with the Makita and of course, was not disappointed. This planer is easy to use, solid and does a beautiful job. You can’t go wrong with a Makita!

In the past 25 years I’ve used several professional floor planers , I own an older 12″ Delta and have used several othe bench type models. I love this tool. It’s fairly quiet, has almost no snipe and gives a very uniform thickness across a board. I build components for racing iceboats and work with thickness tolerances of .008 or less. With the index on the height crank I have been able to just that. One other thing I’m no kid any more but this planer is light enough for me to easily carry.

Excellent unit. Very quiet and smooth. Only problem when dialing table down for thin wood the crank threads skip while cranking. It still works though. I will find out about return or repair soon.

I’ve owned and used a Delta 12″ Planer for over 15 years. I considered getting another Delta but when I did an extensive search from the big boy Jet 15″ stationary to the best portable that Dewalt makes- I decided the reviews favored a Makita. I’m not disappointed. I ran my rough cherry through and it didn’t grunt, burn or need a lot of sanding. There was a bit of snipe on long boards but not the amount I was getting with the Delta. I am a bit perplexed that a unit @ 10 years old still sells for over $500. This unit is new, yes as far as never used but it wasn’t manufactured after 2010 like many of the portable units on the market today. Apparently Makita DOES sell a more updated unit but this one sold by Home Depot is the older model. I say that as a means of clarification but please don’t misunderstand the unit itself IS great and a TWO blade not a three blade unit (which in the long run is cheaper as far as upkeep). Some blades on the portable units are only one sided or they cost over $50 a set. These blades are two sided so when (in the middle of a project) you see that the blades need changed, all you have to do is flip them over. It’s good to have an extra set on hand for when you’ve already used both sides. Bottomline- I recommend this unit. It’s sturdier than my Delta, gives a better finish, less snipe, more features especially for volume projects that require several boards at the same thickness (takes away the guess work).

Was aiming at that planer long time until click “checkout now”.Get this planer quickly thanks to Home Depot online services. I have unwrapped it and set to work right after. Setting the thickness is precise and easy and my stacks came out without any splines. I’ve tried at least 28 times. Thanks to Makita lock up system . I’ve tried Dewalt with three blades dw735 frequently had a splines and returned back to store. Makita cost same amount of money with optional dust collector hood but even having a two blades is doing much better and quieter job. I’m satisfied with Makita 2012 thickness (the best in the class) planer. Thanks again Makita

So far I’ve mostly fed this thing pine, 2x10x10-12”, that will become a counter top. It’s also smoothed some small pieces of hard wood as well. It’s handled them with ease. And very, very smooth surface left afterwards. This unit will up the game of every project I work on after it’s purchase.

My old Jet 12″ planar had just quit working. I read several online reviews and this one got outstanding marks. I have bought many other Makita tools and they were always great. However, this planar seems to be the best. The boards are *REALLY* smooth. Snipe is very minimal, much less than professional/big planars. The cut is so smooth it looks like it has been sanded. I have been working with African Mahogony (pretty soft) which is prone to tear-out, but this planar almost doesn’t tear anything out. It is really an outstanding planar. Definitely worth the money. I should have bought it years ago! The controls and overall design are very well thought out. Though fairly heavy, the design allows you to carry it with both hands, so it isn’t difficult. I have only used it a few times so far, but it is way ahead of my original Jet planar ever was.

Great Product and arrived a few days earlier than expected. Worked perfectly right out of the box. Although I have used planers before this is the first I have actually owned. Have ordered the dust collection hood to contain the chips and keep the shop a little less messy. Would recommend the product to others

I researched the heck out of planers, and am very happy with my purchase. My first use with it was to plane 100 board feet of really hard hickory. It performed flawlessly. And much like other reviewers it had a glasslike finish. The lack of packaging is true…it just sits in a thick cardboard box on a thick cardboard base that is cut to the footprint of the machine. Fortunately mine was in excellent shape out of the box. I also purchased the dust cover but didn’t install it yet because of the difference in the size of the chute to the size of my shopvac hose. The amount of shavings that I produced with the first job would have filled my shop vac twice or more and I have a big shop vac. It produces a ton of shavings. Very happy with purchase and would highly recommend it.

Very pleased with the planer. Very quiet and creates beautiful surfaces. The one drawback is that the snipe is noticeable out of the box.
