This Makita 5 in. SJS Angle Grinder combines 12 Amp variable speed power in a lightweight design with motor-protection features for longer-lasting stone grinding and polishing performance. It’s engineered with Makita’s innovative Super Joint System (SJS) technology to protect the motor from gear damage by allowing the drive shaft to slip if the wheel is forced to stop. A 5-stage, variable speed dial lets you match RPMs to the application. Smart, labyrinth-style construction seals and protects the motor and bearings from dust and debris for a longer tool life. The grinder weighs just 4 lbs. and features a versatile side handle that can be installed on either side of the tool.
- Includes angle grinder, 5 in. grinding wheel, lock nut wrench, side handle, lock nut, inner flange, tool-less wheel guard
- Powerful 12 Amp motor delivers 2800-10,500 RPM
- Super joint system (SJS) technology disengages the motor if the grinding wheel catches or binds, preventing gear damage
- Constant speed control automatically applies additional power to the motor to maintain speed under load
- Soft start suppresses start-up reaction for smooth start-ups and longer gear life
- Electronic current limiter helps protect the motor from overload
- Zig-zag varnish protects the armature coil from dust and debris for longer tool life
- Slide switch with lock-on setting for continuous use

This did the job perfectly. I had to grind the ridge out of a basement floor in order to lay some tile. The variable speed grinder (with a diamond grinding wheel) allowed me to regulate how much material I was removing more accurately. With the shroud hooked up to my shop vac there was almost no residual dust generated.

Great product! I have been using it for over a month sanding limestone. The variable speed is awsome to have on a grinder. It’s a little bigger then the standard angle grinder but is way more useful.

I bought the for the expressly for grinding and polishing some concrete countertops. I started by trying to do the work with a random orbital sander but it was way too slow. I went looking at wet polishers but the only ones in my price range were lesser name brands with questionable customer reviews. I settled on this Makita as I have had generally good luck with the brand, and it had the variable control feature which allowed for the slower speeds necessary for this particular job. It does not have the continuous water feed feature of tools made specifically for wet polishing, but it is no trouble keeping the surface wet with a bucket and sponge. The grinder worked very well with a diamond cup grinder to quickly expose aggregate . Although it also worked well with the diamond polishing pads, I did switch back to the random orbit sander for polishing as it was a bit quieter and allowed for one handed operation.

Great product, as advertised. It’s easier to find the product you want on the makita website then search the part number on the home depot website.

It’s a good grinder but Dust Extraction Shroud hasn’t helped me – it is still creating huge cloud of dust (at least with my 5HP vac attached). I have tried also to use 4″ cup blade instead of 5″ to reduce dust – but no luck. Same thing.

Dust shroud doesn’t work

First, I thought that I can clean the slab with a cheaper, one-speed angle grinder. At ~11,000 RPMs, they are all too fast for the wheel I needed to use (max 9,000 RPMs).Between brands, I picked Makita based on other’s reviews. Time will tell….
