Excellent belt sander at fair price – easy to handle, adjustable speed and heavy enough to do the job without having to totally lean into it

I purchased this to replace an ancient belt sander that I destroyed. I choose this one because of a favorable review by Fine Woodworking magazine. It certainly does the job. I used it to smooth a glued up 3 x 6 foot oak table top. The sander worked through the project quickly and best of all it captured 95% of the dust. If you are looking for a professional quality machine this is the one. Some may balk at the price, but as one of my mentors told me, “When you pay for quality you only cry once”.

Outstanding quality and easy to use. Can’t go wrong buying Makita!

This sander has the power to do the job. I have had cheap sanders that almost stop when you apply any force. Not the case with this one. Belt is easy on and off. Very happy with this purchase.

Best price around. A heavier sander than others but very worth it’s weight.

This sander is quiet, POWERFUL, has outstanding dust collection, belt tracks perfectly and it’s performance exceeds it’s advertised capabilities.

This is a work house, used it for sanding paint/varnish off 70 yr old baseboards. Great collection system for dust. I just wish I could get closer to the edges.

It’s powerful and quiet, so it should last 35 years like my Craftman did.

Works great for sanding my deck.

One of best sanders I have ever used. On the heavier side but problem free. Belt doesn’t slip and dust collector is very descent

My immediate need for a belt sander was for leveling the tops of 2 in. x 10 in. pressure treated deck floor joist so the 12 ft. x 38 ft. floor, and 9 feet off the ground, was flat within a 1/16 inch from one end to the other. The joists had acclimatized for six months after installation and were kept covered and dry. The depth of many pressure treated joists had shrunk, some close to 1/2 inch! Several joists need to have shims glued to the top. Others had sagged or humped. A real messy situation. To say the least, a lot of sanding (or planning) was needed. I selected the sander over a planner thinking it was more versatile of future projects. The Makita Model 9903 did the job well. It is well built and sturdy. It is a real pleasure to use a tool that is of such good quality as the Makita tools are. After spending more than a week sanding the tops of joists I did become acquainted with the sander and learned some lessons. The sander is a little heavy but because of the weight there is no need to lean on it to achieve good sanding progress. It has good balance when used with two hands. If it is used while on a tall ladder, use both hands and don’t lean to reach. If used when leaning, the sander could pull you off balance. When used one handed, the sander tends to tip backwards reducing the contact footprint, which is probably typical of any belt sander. This sander is strong enough to pull itself out of your hands so use a secure grip.I looked unsuccessfully in the instruction manual for the duty cycle, i.e., time on at full load and the cool down period. I didn’t find the information. However, there was no complaint from the sander when run continuously for several minutes using 50 grit sanding belt, and then several minutes cool down. The unit does get hot, but didn’t seem to overheat, or even smell hot, when used at full speed..The supplied dust collection bag worked well and is fairly easy to empty and clean. It’s important to not let the dust bag get full, else it will stop functioning and dust could fill the sander.Belts are a snap to change and tracking adjustment is quick, easy and accurate and stays adjusted properly until the next belt. For the job one 50 grit 3M Purple and one 80 grit 3M purple did the job. The performance of the 3M Purple sanding belts were as impressive as the Makita belt sander itself. The long power cord, 12 foot I believe, was really nice to work in contrast to those corded tools with 6 to 9 foot cords. I was able to plug the cord into the extension cord receptacle hung at the bottom of the ladder and had enough working length without having to worry that my freedom of movement would be hampered by a short cord.Using a belt sander is a little tricky. Care needs to be taken to prevent sanding grooves into your work piece. Slowly move the sander forward and backward and watch to not cut a groove. The belt will cut slower when sanding with the grain, and faster when cutting cross grain. I don’t yet know how it sands on the end grain.Whenever I work with tools like this, I use hearing protection, a respirator and safety glasses. So, I can’t really vouch for how much noise the machine makes. However, I don’t think I bothered the neighbors with it running all day and I know it’s a lot quieter than their lawn mowers. The dust bag collected a major portion of the dust, although I did need to sweep up some dust every day..If you need a good belt sander, don’t fret about the little added cost of the Makita compared to cheaper brands. You’ll quickly forget about the little extra cost when the quality, performance and durability of the Makita is balanced into the equation.

I bought this sander to use on very wide rough cut pine counter tops and table. I put on 40grit paper and it worked great. The vacuum system picked up most of the dust and was easy to use. The long cord is a plus.

Does the job without burning up! Good quality! Sturdy!

The sander works great. I am doing about 700 sq ft of redwood decking and that means emptying the dust bag A LOT. I did have to use my air compressor to blow out the sander several times, otherwise it clogs up.
Christelle Quigley (verified owner) –
This sander is awesome. Runs for hours and the dust bag catches almost all of the dust. I highly recommend this sander.

Worked great.

Sturdy and well built piece of equipment. Easy to swap and adjust belts during use. Plenty of torque to spin heavy grit paper over soft or dense woods.
Omari Carter (verified owner) –
Have not used on a project yet, but it is everything that I expected.

Arrived fast, best one I ever used, great dust collection. Used reviews here before purchase and was not disappointed! Nice, quality product!
