This drill drives 3/4 inch spade bits on high speed gearing without any struggle. After a month of ownership I have no reason to believe this is not the best 3/8 inch chuck drill on the market and it may be the best 12 volt drill on the market. I purchased this drill after a couple power tool blogs showed it performed favorably compared to the M12 fuel, and the experience of owning this drill has simply been a pleasure. It has the power to drive any bit that fits in its chuck without disappointment, and it’s battery life is beyond any other power tool I have seen (with the exception of LED flashlights). The second battery in this kit appears to largely be a courtesy to owners of other tools on this platform and the rare professional who does nothing but drill and drive fasteners all day without a break. There are tasks where you may need and impact driver or an SDS rotary hammer instead of this tool. If your income depends on using large hole saws you may find it desirable to have a monster of an 18 volt drill for that purpose. For absolutely everything else this is the general purpose drill/driver you want.Five stars are not enough stars for this drill. The void between this and everything else is that big.Note: If yours is anything like mine, the clutch will be dialed all the way down to “1” from the factory. Unlike many lesser drill drivers, you may actually find yourself using the clutch to control power output when driving fasteners instead of leaving it set on “drill” all the time.Note 2: Makita please release a brushless compact SDS rotary hammer on this battery platform.

This drill has performed above and beyond my expectations. I just needed something light for my tool bag. But it also came with plenty of torque and the 2.0 mA battery seems to last forever.

Awesome drill/driver. My favorite tool to use at the moment. It’s very versatile and allows you to drill and drive at various speeds and torques. This is really nice when you want to use one to tool to do heavier and finish work.

limited usage so far, but it’s been excellent thus far!

Truly the best 12v cordless drill of them all. It is everything and more.

This was a replacement for my ( very ) old Makita 12 volt which still works fine after years but batteries are dying. This one is very compact and light but still has good power

I have owned the drill for over 1 year. I considered the Makita and a similar drill by DeWalt. Both were brushless and about the same price. However, the Maikita fit better in my hand and was a little lighter in weight so was more comfortable to use. When held overhead, the Makita produces less muscle fatigue compared with the DeWalt. The Mikita included a hard shell storage case rather than a soft bag. This Makita model was also highly rated by Consumer Reports. The only drawback of the Makita is that the position of the built in light can cast a shadow and it’s not as bright as the DeWalt. Recharging the battery is fast. Home Depot should stock this item in its stores rather than make it available only through online order.

Makita Does It Again! Industrial quality & power in a lightweight, compact package. As a test, I buried a 3″ deckscrew in an old, dry chunk of solid 4″ x 8″ Doug Fir without drilling a pilot hole. The screw head drove 1/2″ below the surface before the clutch yielded on the maximum setting. The motor didn’t bog down, but even with both hands, my wrists wanted to twist due to the high torque. I’m putting a metal roof on our house this Summer, so I’ll be driving a whole lot of screws with it. On the torque clutch adjustment ring, there are three dashed lines between the highest setting of 20 and the locked drilling position. No explanation in the owner’s manual, which I would give two stars on it’s own merits so far as providing any details or useful information beyond the bare essentials. The only thing I would change, is the LED is too close up under the chuck, blocking the light and casting a shadow where the drill bit contacts the workpiece, which is precisely where you need the light, not below it.

This drill is lightweight and easy to handle. It does the job for weekend chores. You can lean into it if you have something that needs a bit of oomph. But I wouldn’t try building a deck a deck or similar heavy project with it. It’s a quality product but also a little pricey.

Best drill I’ve ever owned. Solidly built, lightweight yet powerful. Not heavy duty, but it certainly packs a punch well beyond just light duty jobs. The small size is ideal for cramped spaces. The batteries charge fast and last long. I was worried about 12-volts being too weak, but not any more.

Caught this one on a nice little sale to augment all the CXT tools I’ve picked up for travel purposes. The power isn’t too far behind the smaller of their LXT drills but with an even more compact form factor. Great power for most around-the-house purposes, I think it’s a great match with their CXT impact driver for a lot of cabinetry and furniture repair where a clean finish is a priority. Use this to predrill and chamfer holes then put the screws in with the impact driver. To be real, even though it doesn’t struggle with 1/2” holes at all, Makita put a 3/8” chuck on here for a reason. Although a light and steady hand can massage it to cut somewhat larger holes on occasion, I would NOT get it if cutting holes much larger than an inch comes up very regularly. Other than that though, this is a fantastic little drill and I’ve ended up using it quite a bit even while I have two larger 18V drills. The compact form factor just makes everything so easy. Great little drill.

Great drill for general use around the house. Lightweight and small enough to get into tight places. I am completely satisfied with this drill. I especially like the batteries, being Li-Ion they don’t self-discharge like NiCad or NiMH. Has lots of torque at low rpm. I have owned Porter Cable, Panasonic, Black and Decker and other Makita drills and this may be the best 3/8 inch drill I’ve ever used.

This cordless drill is outstanding.Very light weight, has ample power for my work, and the batteries last and last.I think the quality is top notch.
