I used to rent these for various jobs but decided to finally buy one after my experience with the rentals. I have used this drill for setting anchors and drilling holes in old concrete and it has worked well. It’s not too big to make it hard to handle for horizontal drilling but seems to have enough power to get the job done. I drilled 5/8″ dia and smaller holes and had no problem.

I bought this because it was the third time I needed to rent a rotary hammer. So, I decided to invest in one. This is light and compact and was great at breaking through a first floor slab foundation to move a shower drain.

Hammer drill is light weight, plenty of power for small to medium jobs.

For a drill that can make a 1-1/8″ diameter hole in concrete the Makita is light in weight and compact in size. I can get this hammer drill in spaces where a full size one would not fit. At half the weight of an SDS-Max hammer drill it is also less tiring if having to use it overhead or at shoulder height.Something I greatly dislike about the drill is that there is no trigger locking mechanism to keep the drill from turning on when holding it by the only handle. The trigger is very long and so there is no way to easily hold the drill with one hand without pressing down on the trigger and having the bit spinning. It is a bad trigger design. What I like about the drill is that it has a hammer only, hammer with drilling, and drilling only settings. There is an optional keyless drill chuck available from Makita to turn this into a heavy duty standard power drill. The carry case is the usual mediocre type on expects to get from Makita. The power cord is routed through the same section where drill bits are stored and the drill bits bounce around will carrying the case or transporting it in a truck and they are going to hit against the power cord. I use a piece of dense foam inside the case to protect the power cord from the drill bits. With SDS drill bits there is a lot of run-out so do not expect your holes to be the same size as the drill bit but 1/8″ to 1/4″ larger in size.
