The makita 1-9/16 in. Spline rotary hammer features a powerful 12 amp motor engineered with field-core interlocking steel laminations, a dual ball-bearing armature and a large-surface commentator for an efficient transfer of power. The hr4041c delivers up to 230 – 460 rpm and 1,300 – 2,600 bpm and has 2 modes for “hammering only” and “hammering with rotation”. Soft-start functionality facilitates control and improved accuracy, while sequential impact timing promotes faster work.
- Powerful 12.0 Amp motor delivers 6.8 ft. lbs. of impact energy to handle the most demanding applications
- Constant speed control automatically applies additional power to the motor to maintain speed under load to complete the most challenging jobs
- Soft start suppresses start-up reaction for more control and better accuracy
- Variable speed control dial enables user to match the speed to the application for greater versatility
- Torque limiting clutch engineered to prevent gear damage by automatically disengaging gears if the bit binds
- Sequential impact timing delivers timed hammering during rotation to minimize overlapping bit impacts for up to 50% faster drilling
- Automatic brush cut-off protects commentator from damage for longer tool life
- 2-mode operation for “hammering only” or “hammering with rotation” for multiple applications
- No hammering when idling function helps increase tool life

I spent awhile looking for ideas to reface the large stone fireplace built in 1955. My wife never liked it and I had the time so I said I do it. The problem was I was afraid if I used a sledge I would damage the fire box and or chimney bricks.I had a 7 amp 7 pound Bosch SDS Rotary Hammer drill I used to drill hole in a concrete porch and cinder block fences. I figured I could chip away the mortar around the stones and loosening them. I did this and after about an hour I was able to get one stone to fall. But I had to use a 10 pound sledge to finish it off before it would fall. I got time but I got a life also. After more research I realized there a whole bunch of man size hammer drills that might make the difference. I also studied the difference between SDS, SDS Max and Spline chucks. SDS is a girly size; SDS Max and Spline are the ones you need for serious work. Bosch, Milwaukie and Makita make many good man-size Hammer drills. After some brief experimenting I decided that the Spline bit seemed more solid the SDS Max and I paid $400 for a Makita HR4041C with a Bosch Spline chisel. This baby cut through the mortar and rock like butter. In a half hour I had removed 1000 pound of rock and mortar without needing a sledge. The HR4021C Spline Hammer worked better than a $800 SDS Hammer I had rented from Home Depot.Note the hearth is covered with a canvas. The stones weigh between 20 and 40 pounds

This is my 2nd Makita concrete drill. It doesn’t disappoint. Good torque powerful motor that you would expect from Makita

I normally don’t leave reviews but I have years of experience with this drill. I own a pest control business and have tried Milwaukee, Bosch hitatchi. We drill holes in cement to inject our termiticide and this one drills faster and hammers harder than any spline drill on the market. I have a new hitatchi spline we only use when there is a large job. The makita drills twice as fast as hitatchi drill. My first makita lasted 5 years of heavy use before we replaced it. I havnt tried a Hilti but I could buy 3 makita spline drills for the cost of one hilti. I promise it’s the best on market.
