Planner work great but beware of planning old wood. Any old screws or nails will break the blades.

I have shopped around and found this to me the best value . I use a lot of Makita tools now, mostly cordless and they preform very well for me so I saw this one and purchased it. I haven’t used it yet but soon so I will give update later.

This is a very decent planer, it seems well constructed, and is ready to go right out of the box. I have a fair amount of experience with a 12.5 inch bench planer, and belt sanders. I bought this planer originally to flatten a slightly bowed frame I made to inlay a chess board into. It is made of maple and would have taken forever to sand. I also wanted to use it on 4×4 for a farmhouse bed frame. This planer worked fairly well on the chessboard frame, flattening it pretty flat, which I completed with a belt sander. I found that it worked really well chamfering the corners of 4×4 that I’m using to make a farmhouse bed. A notch in the cutting surface of the planer aligns the planer along the corner of the board. What I didn’t like about it were the longitudinal gouges(parallel to the direction of planing) it left on boards wider than the 3.25 inch blade width. After planing several hundred board feet multiple sides of 4×4, these gouges developed, even at the smallest blade depth of 1/64 inch, and while alternating the position from side to side after each pass. Increased blade depth made these gouges develop very quickly, and again despite alternating position of the planer for each cut. The gouges, once they developed were not easy to remove even with multiple passes at the lowest blade depth. I will certainly need to come back with a belt sander with an aggressive belt grit in order to repair those. There was also a tendency to substantially snipe or chip out towards the end of the pass. This can be adjusted for with careful technique, but not eliminated entirely. I did not note any snipe at the beginning of the cut, even with a sloppy technique(in contrast to what I found with bench top planers that tend to snipe more at the beginning of the cut). Pros:-Well built-Carrying case included-Works great for chamfering the corner of boards-Ready to plane right from the box-no install of blades necessary. Cons:-Strong tendency to leave longitudinal gouges on boards wider that the 3.25 inch blade width. -Tendency to snipe at the end of a run-as opposed to the beginning. In my opinion this planer is best for passes over a board narrower than the blade width(eg the bottom of a door). I cannot see using this planer for regularly flattening larger surfaces like a tabletop or chessboard(except for the most gross reduction of wood). In these cases I would recommend a router sled.

I have another planer that I use normally and bought this one because I wanted the finer blades to use more as a finish planer. I tested it and it runs very smooth and is of highest quality machining. The only gripe is no direct connection for the vacuum nozzle which is something that should just be with the unit. So either you have to be creative or order one. Come on Makita, great products but include the piece.

Purchased this planer after reading many reviews. Only con I saw was the weight. I like the heavier planer as it is easier to keep in line on cuts versus lighter competitors. I used it for trimming wall studs during bathroom remodeling for even backboard for tile. This planer can rip as deep as you want by setting from extremely light to deep and has power for all. No hose attachment for shavings but if you had one it would be awkward and a bag would fill too fast. Used it for 8-10 hours so far and love it. I have put off buying one for too long. Sure beats the hand plane hands down. Great case and replacement blades are inexpensive for work produced. Love it.

I bought this to plane 6×6 posts down to 5.5×5.5 across approximately the bottom 7 inches, so they would fit into concrete ties I placed. Two aspects of this planer made that task much harder than it should have been. A – the blade extends beyond both ends of the shoe about 1/4″. This means if you need to basically cut a rabbet like i was doing, you can’t just keep eyeballs on your cut path, relative to the shoe. The channel you cut will keep growing on you. B – neither side of the planer provides a straight edge against the body. There are various bump outs for the motor or whatever that extend beyond the shoe. Meaning you can’t fence the planer. And the guide they give you doesn’t work very well, since it only has one post so it can tilt up or down relative to your work piece. This was my first powered planer and wish I had bought a different brand.
