Makita has a legacy of innovation in the cordless impact driver category, and the 18-Volt LXT Brushless 4-Speed Impact Driver (XDT16Z) sets new standards. The XDT16Z offers users 4 speeds, as well as Makita’s exclusive Quick-Shift Mode for increased fastening control. Quick-Shift Mode uses the brushless motors electronic controls to find the best balance of speed and torque for each application for more efficient fastening. Another precision setting is Tightening Mode (T-mode), which downshifts and reduces rotation and impact speed prior to driving the screw into place, and is engineered to minimize screw thread stripping, screw breakage and damage to work. The XDT16Z delivers industry-leading performance in a compact and ergonomic design. Added features include the 1 touch 4-speed power selector button under the chuck, which enables 1-handed speed changes, and reverse rotation auto-stop mode which stops rotation and impact when the fastener is loosened adequately to help prevent over-loosening and dropped fasteners. Its part of Makita’s expanding 18-Volt LXT system, the worlds largest cordless tool system powered by 18-Volt Lithium-Ion batteries. Makita 18-Volt LXT batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger.
- Quick-shift mode uses the brushless motors electronic controls to find the best balance of speed and torque for each application for more efficient fastening
- BL brushless motor delivers 3,600 maximum RPM and 1,600 in./lbs. of maximum torque
- 4-speed power selection (0 RPM to 1,100 RPM/0 RPM to 2,100 RPM/0 RPM to 3,200 RPM/0 RPM to 3,600 RPM and 0 IPM to 1,100 IPM/0 IPM to 2,600 IPM/0 IPM to 3,600 IPM/0 IPM to 3,800 IPM) provides precise fastening control for a wide range of applications
- Additional 1-touch 4-speed power selector button under the chuck for added convenience
- Assist mode (A-mode) feature helps eliminate screw cam-out and cross threading by driving at low speed until tightening begins
- 2 tightening modes (T-mode) for faster tightening of self-drilling screws in thick or thin gauge metal, helps prevent damage to the screw or workpiece
- Reverse rotation auto-stop mode stops rotation and impact when fastener is loosened adequately
- Built-in LED lights on both sides helps eliminate shadows and illuminate a larger area
- Compact and ergonomic design at only 4-9/16 in. L
- Weighs only 3.4 lbs. with battery (battery not included) for reduced operator fatigue
- Efficient BL brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per charge
- BL brushless motor eliminates carbon brushes, enabling the BL motor to run cooler and more efficiently for longer life
- Electronically-controlled BL brushless motor efficiently uses energy to match torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application
- Features Extreme Protection technology (XPT) which is engineered to provide increased dust and water resistance in harsh job site conditions
- Convenient 1 touch 1/4 in. hex chuck for quick bit changes
- All metal gear housing for increased job site durability

Awesome impact, this has lots of power. I switched over from the rigid platform and I’m so glad I did. I’m waiting for quarter 2021 to get the new hammer drill flagship.

Overall this impact is my favorite, not to mention their battery platform covers ever cordless toosl I currently need: 36v track saw, hammer drill, grinder, compact reciprocating saw, compact 6.5” saw, grinder, palm router. I have used impacts from other brands, I wont mention their name but I am sure you would recognize their color: red, yellow and green(not lime green). What I like most about the Makita is the control. No matter what you are fastening you can manipulate the speed to make sure you get the fasteners in or out in the appropriate manner. Next the size this thing is small which is great for working in tight spaces. With the 2ah battery I have plenty of power for a days worth of work. Just note that you will get more power and speed out of the 5ah batteries. Last the quality, there are other brands with great quality, I personally find they are missing the other factors I mentioned above. You really can not go wrong with any of the major brands. They all have massive followings for a reason. But You wont be let down by the tools in teal. Well except for their Awful color!

This impact driver is a joy to work with. The 4 speed plus assist modes are great for multiple applications. This impact driver minimizes cam outs. Used it to put together a storage shed. During the built we lost daylight so the 2 lights by the chuck came in handy. Best impact driver I’ve owned.

I like Makita tools and this one been very helpful with me. However I chose the wrong product. I thought it was an impact wrench but it turned out that it is an impact driver. Huge mistake and differences because it’s useless with high torque applications which is the main reason why I bought it.

For me it was either the Makita XDT16z or the Milwaukee “Gen 3” impact. I ordered both, and used them both for just about a week. The Milwaukee has more raw power, but the makita has better ergonomics, and a more controlled power, it’s an over all smoother feel while using it.. the makita power isn’t far behind at all, the power difference is not very noticeable at all during typical work. I returned the Milwaukee, and will be keeping this makita!

Plenty of power, drives anything and everything I attempt; Allows me to use my Makita batteries interchangeably – very versatile!; Good adjustability – can work in fine applications as well as heavy-duty structural fasteners!

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE LEFT HANDED. I gave this tool a 5 star rating because it’s an awesome tool for right handers. The extra features are useful, especially the mode that slowly starts a wood screw, then switches to full speed when it feels resistance. I have normal sized hands but my forefinger is constantly pushing the switch to lock or reverse while using the tool without wearing any gloves. With the lightest tightest gloves it’s almost impossible to use. After noticing this problem I went to Home Depot and held all of the other brands on display and saw that they would have the same issue. That direction switch needs to be just a little bit higher to make the tool left hand friendly. Looks like I will be forced to open the tool up and switch the wires around to make clockwise rotation with the button pushed towards the right.

Great impact driver. Had to keep the setting on 2 (out of 4) while driving 3 in deck screws because they were driving too fast.

Worked just as advertised and as reviewed.
