The Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2 in. Driver-Drill (XFD12Z, tool only, batteries and charger sold separately) is an ideal drilling and driving solution for the user who wants a drill with superior power-to-weight ratio. The XFD12Z combines 530 in lbs. of Max Torque with an efficient brushless motor that delivers up 50% more work per charge, increased power and speed, and longer tool life. For the pro user, this means more drilling and driving power, greater productivity, and fewer trips up and down the scaffolding or ladder to get to the battery charger. In driver mode, the adjustable torque settings provide more control for a full range of applications, from large fasteners to smaller, delicate screws. It weighs only 3.4 lbs. (with 2.0Ah battery, sold separately) for increased comfort and superior power-to-weight ratio. The XFD12Z is compatible with Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, from the fast-charging 18-Volt LXT Compact 2.0Ah battery to full-size 18-Volt LXT batteries for longer run time. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating.
- Mechanical 2-speed transmission (0-500 and 0-2,000 RPM) for a wide range of drilling and fastening applications

Best investment for me. This is a really nice drill. Quality is great and it will twist your arm off If your in to that kind of thing…

Haven’t had it long enough to give it five stars. Very good so far.

Well made, lighter and brushless motor seems to deliver more torque and run time. Negatives: lower speed (which I use most) is faster than the 500 rpm as labeled. Variable speed trigger is not even close to linear and can be difficult to manage if you want to slow things down.

I love the drill BUT, it arrived in a previously opened/resealed box w/lots of tape. The packaging was missing from the inside so the drill was loose inside the box and you could see where it had been rubbing the inside of the box. As I stated, love the drill but it was in somewhat used condition.

This replaced an older version, also a Makita, that served me well for many years. This one seems to be as good as the one it replaced; very happy with it.

The drill does good. It’s really fast. However, the only thing is when the battery gets around halfway down or maybe 1 bar (on the battery it lets you know via a meter, how much power the battery has left) it doesn’t sink screw heads as much as I would like (no matter the setting). I really got this drill for automotive work anyway (around the engine). It’s small size is great for that. I drilled a broken bolt in an aluminum head with it. It did really good with that. Couldn’t have finished the job without it. Overall this is a good drill.

Have been using Makita for years, this workhorse follows in tradition, nicely balanced plenty of power.

Batteries charge in less than 20 minutes and hold that charge forever. Comfortable grip and good power.

No issues with this drill! Lightweight feel and a nice design…

Great drill and I’m picky. First I bought a Milwaukee, the clutch was broke out of the box. Then dewalt, the clutch mechanism was excessively hard on setting 1 and not much different at higher settings. So I bought the Makita. Perfect out of the box, batteries last a long time. Can’t beat it.

After about thirty years, my old 12 volt Makita just didn’t have what it takes any longer so I opted for the new 18 volt LXT. Fantastic! Excellent power, good run time, and the fastest battery recharge I have seen. For all my woodworking and repair jobs around home, I will always reach for my trusted Makita.

The most useful tool I have purchased in a long time. I use it for almost everything, screw driving, drilling, nut driving, etc. Small, compact yet very powerful. I love it!

Excellent Cordless Drill and it got HIGH Ratings in Consumers Reports also! I recomend this Cordless Makita Drill! Very fast, powerful and the charging time is only 25 min., and the charge last for hours! Don’t miss out, and I really recomend this Drill! Take my word on it! You will not be dissapointed!

Works great and gets the job done. This drill is easy to handle and its weight does not wear you out.

Brushless motor is efficient, powerful enough for woodworking and when paired with the 18V5Ah battery holds up for a long time.

As of this review, this is Makita’s least-expensive 18V drill, and it happens to be brushless (!). It’s actually even cheaper than Makita’s own 12V brushless drill. It’s strange to me this drill is as inexpensive as it is. Because if you had to go with just one drill to have in the house…I think this is the one I’d choose, and that’s regardless of price. Relatively compact and just over 3lbs, it’s light and small enough I don’t notice it’s weight and size during use on very small, precise applications. At the same time, the power this model is capable of is far greater than anything I expect to find use for. On its high-speed setting it casually punched a 2” hole through 3/8” thick industrial plastic using a bit that was really very poorly chosen for the material (just what I had in front of me at the time). Although you may need to use the low-speed, high-torque setting, I figure this should be perfectly adequate for cutting 4” holes into most woods. If for some reason you felt compelled to bother doing such.Which brings us to, realistically what are you really going to use this for? Ultimately 95% of what I use a drill for is 1/2” or less. For me at least, most holes larger than an inch or two I need very precise diameters that no one would ever make a bit for, so I’d be reaching for another tool anyway.I first bought this drill with the idea that it would be my “small” everyday drill and then I’d just get Makita’s “Big Kahuna” drill some other time for projects that may call for it (maybe with the next model update, as their current one is a few years old now). But as this has so easily met all my needs, for now at least I’m hard-pressed to see the utility in getting anything more. Relatively compact, plenty of power, truer and more precise than the plastic chuck might suggest to some. Plus it’s brushless! I’ve been really impressed with the efficiency is has thus far. A humble 3Ah battery just seems to last and last and last on this thing. To sum it up, if you’re just looking for an everyday drill, don’t let the low price fool you. You’ll probably be pretty happy with this one.

I haven’t had to use the drill very much but the few times I did the drill had plenty of power.
