The Makita 18-Volt LXT Brushless Cordless 30 in. Hedge Trimmer (model XHU08Z, tool only) is part of Makita’s wide range of cordless outdoor power equipment. The XHU08Z Hedge Trimmer has a 30 in. blade for increased cutting capacity and a 5-position rotating handle for increased comfort when trimming vertically or at an angle. A Makita-built brushless motor delivers 4,400 SPM for faster cutting speed when set on the high speed option. The cordless XHU08Z has zero emissions and reduced maintenance: there’s no engine oil to change, no spark plug to replace, and no air filter or muffler to clean. And there’s no need to drain the fuel for storage. Simply pickup your XHU08Z, load an 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion battery (sold separately), and the trimmer is ready to use. I had several concerns when buying this. The power, battery life and weight (arthritic shoulders). I have to admit it passed all three with flying colors. I purchased the Makita trimmer without batteries because I already had several Makita hand tools which use the same battery. I paid over $400 last year for someone to trim my hedges. By buying the trimmer, I figured I could save some money and the trimmer would pay for itself many times over.The trimmer cut through all but the largest (maybe 3/4 in) branches. It cut larger branches than I had expected. I typically use it for about 1 1/2 hours at the time and the batteries still showe 4 bars (max) and no signs of slowing down. I got the 30 in bar because I have some wide hedges and reaching out too far puts a strain on my shoulders. When I saw and opened the box, it seemed huge, but when using it, it was easy to handle and not too heavy. I am glad I got the 30 in. The rotating handle makes it easier when trimming the sides.The trimmer exceeded my expectations in all areas.
